I was rummaging through the garage yesterday, and found a copy of "Ontario Public School Arithmetic". Price 10 cents, published by The Robert Simpson Company Limited in 1910.

Remember you can only use pencil and paper.

Today's problem:

Page 182, question 6.
Find the principal which will amount to $3800 in 1 and 1/2 years at 5% compounded half-yearly; $5200 in 2 years at 6% compounded half-yearly; $4750 in 1 year at 4% compounded quarterly.

I'm curious what grade or age level this is geared towards.
These days, it's often challenging for a cashier to count out the correct change for a twenty on a simple transaction.

The book has no forward for the teacher, but it starts with simple addition and subtraction.
There is a question on page 79 that asks:
At a High School examination, there were 200 candidates. On average each used 10 sheets for each subject. There were 15 subjects to be examined on. How man reams of paper were used?

I suppose that we could infer from this question that High School and Public School were separate, as today.

3800 = x * (1.025)^3
x = 3800 / 1.07689062 = 3528.68

5200 = x * (1.03)^4
x = 4620.13

4750 = x * (1.01)^4
x = 4564.66

And a Ream is 500 sheets.

The interest questions are correct, but (at the time) a ream is 20 quires, and a quire is 24 sheets.

Maybe you would like this one:

A Canadian manufacturer imported a machine which cost in London 85 pounds. He paid 3pound 10 shillings freight and an ad valorem duty of 30%. What, in Canadian money, was the total cost of the machine?

1 pound = 4.8667 CAD

Heard there was another school stabbing to-day. This one happened at a Missisauga high school. When I was in high school the worst that happened was a snowball to the back of the head.

Then you were lucky, or older than I am. Had a gun, baseball bat, machete (yes, a machete), screw driver, hammer all pulled on me personally in high school. And I walked away from each encounter. None of the above by students at the school, but outsiders coming in.

And apparently the school got worse after! Crazy, huh? It's why I'm in the 'burbs, and if I can still afford it at the time, my kids are going to private school.

Jeez, I was in a rumble in grade school where somebody brought a rusty cleaver... and these neighbourhoods I grew up in were not the worst, not by a long shot!

I am older than you. When I went to high school we had a code of honour. You settle your differences after school hours one on one with no weapons. Also, the bigger kids protect the little kids from bullies.
Apparently, it is not much safer in the burbs now. Private school is a different matter. There is a screening process and the cost weeds out certain categories of "undesirables".

Yeah, I was in the transition. Got into a few fights protecting smaller kids. I had zero patience for that. And I would say fights within the school were settled one on one. It was the bs coming in from outside. Me and my friends were magnets for it because we didn't back down.

In hindsight, somewhat stupid, but we were kids. And the weapons never actually got used, just used to threaten.

Having said that, our younger brothers were left alone. "Do you know who's brother that is? Don't mess with him." I am thankful for that, because a couple of them were smaller guys that would have had issues standing up for themselves.
