(Hope the mods won't move this thread to the Politics Forum where it will die a painful death.) Anybody following the Quebec election? Here is what I am hearing.

Francois Legault - Quebec students should work and study hard like Asians.

Pauline Marois - Quebec should be a secular society and not let religion force women to cover their faces.

All - Must protect Quebec companies like Rona, Astral, etc. from being taken over by foreign companies, including Canadian companies whose CEO's don't speak French.

this completely belongs to the politics section which I havent bothered with for months, but you have to be suspicious of "drop out rates", a large number of those people are one or two credits short of graduating (usually something like grade 12 English, they had difficulty and said fuck it) and end up going back after realising that life is hard, but without a high school degree it is absolutely brutal.

and 32.4% drop out of University.
Obviously, Quebec doesn't attract enough Chinese and E.I. students.

As usual, language rears its ugly head. Quebec wants to veto the appointment of the new CEO of SNC Lanevin(sp) because he doesn't speak French. Does Quebec not know SNC gets most of its business from outside Quebec?

Who is Quebec? Last I checked, Quebecers were divided about all kinds of issues. That's why they are having an election where the result is highly unpredictable.

I can't fault LeGault's platform. Quebec has a 30% dropout rate from high schools.
Quebec workers also have the lowest productivity in North America. Actually I think the article said in the western developed world but I won't swear to that. Marois is banning religious apparel to all provincial employees not just women. Oddly she regards the crucifix as not being a religious symbol but a cultural one. She earns the title of Biggest Bigot in Canda.
Sadly ceiling cat's cartoon is bang on.

What I don't understand is does this party get any Federal funding?
If it does it should be STOPPED right now as they are attempting to destroy a country.(TREASON MAYBE?)

There was a great letter in yesterdays Globe and Mail. It was pertaining to how Quebecers were upset that the new SNL CEO did not speak French but was highly qualified for the job. The writer said it reminded him of the Lifeguard at a swimming pool in Montreal that could not swim but could hear the cries for help in both languages.

Taking a dispute to voters through a democratic process is not treason, no matter how much you may disagree with it. People in Quebec have a right to self determination.

Agreed. That said, should they vote at some point for seperation, it should be handled like a divorce. A proper accounting of who owes who what, settlement terms for the debt, restrictions on currency, armed forces etc., and the kids should decide who they want to live with. After all that is said and done, Quebec should look somewhat like Greece in terms of their economics. Good luck to them!

The latest poll had 19% undecided, most of them coming from the Liberals. Undecided do not want to vote for Charest because of all the corruption, and do not want to vote for the PQ. Most will probably vote for Legault and it means either a PQ or CAQ minority government. As for referendum, unless the Conservatives do something really stupid, there will not be another one for the next 10 years (if ever).
