question about firefox

I recently downloaded firefox and used it several times. I know that a lot of people do recommend this browser. Now I am not that computer literate. I've done scans using spybot and it has found 3 tracking cookies (i believe). When I click on the 3 objects that spybot has found, it shows that it originates from firefox(default). Is this something I need to be concerned about.

Usually low level tracking cookies are harmless, I delete them nonethless when they are found.

Get 1 more anti spy-wear to second scan your system. Which version of FF you are using ? I have 1 5 0 9 and it's fine so far.

You'll always have cookies no matter what, some are good, some bad.
If you're using FireFox 2.0 tools>options>privacy tab (click around there and tweak your settings to your liking).
To check what versin you're using, click on help>about firefox.
2.0 is the lastest and most stable, with spellcheck.

Not to worry - Those tracking cookies were left there by websites you visited, which don't care what browser you are using (at least wrt cookies). Had you used MS Internet Explorer, they would have been stored in it's cookie cache and SpyBot would have found them just the same.

You can turn off tracking cookies in FireFox, but many of the favorite sites you use today probably need them (storing stock tickers, preferred page context, etc.).

I suggest sweeping and cleaning them routinely (with Spybot S&D and/or Ad-Aware). When I was running IE, I would do this twice a week. Since switching to Firefox, I only do scans every 3-4 weeks. At least in my experience (2+ years with Firefox), it seems to be MUCH better than IE at keeping those items that are particularly worse than tracking cookies off the machine.

I have Firefox/1.5.0.7 and when i scan for updates it says none available. Yet in a previous post it says that 2.0 is the newest. Why will it not update to 2.0?

I recently download FF so I have the most recent one v 2.0.0.1. Which other anti spy-wear do you (or anyone else) suggest? I do have Spybot S & D. I remember when I first download it, the program said that is compatiable with certain other programs like Ad-aware (which I have as well).

I'm not sure Windows Defender actually does anything. Never seen an alert and anything in a scan. Ad-Aware and Spybot always seems to find something significant. Guess I gotta stop surfing porn.

I totally agree about the Windows Defender comment.

I installed it and it did absolutely NOTHING while the other anti-spyware programs installed did.

Why the heck did MS release it for if it does nothing?

I fear (suspect) that MS Defender may be the roadmap that MS uses to invoke Vista Like "suitability controls" on their older OSes. i.e. Any software that at MS's sole discretion should not be run "could" be removed without any user intervention (cause MS knows what's best for you).

Now if that happens, we will need Aniti-MS Defender utilities to strip it off.

Perhaps I'm just being paranoid, but this is exactly a pattern that has occurred before. Stay vigilant.

There are lots of options out there and terb has a wealth of knowledge on security issue as well . Have a search here in your spare time.

When FF 2.0.0.2 installed on each of my computers (about a day apart) via the automatic update notification feature, I immediately got a warning message from my Webroot Spy Sweeper that some Zango/180 spyware had attempted to install. The offending software was quarantined and deleted but still, that's rather worrisome. I use FF all the time. WTF could that be about?
