I went to a car dealership the other day to test drive a new car. The person wanted to copy my drivers licence. WTF?? The person said they would give it back but made 2 copies. The person would not stop calling me about the car. Told them stop calling. Went to another place same thing can I see your DL.

WHY?????

Supposedly, this is to cover themselves that you are legally licensed to drive.

But, its also a good way for the salesman to get your info.

I think my approach to this would be to show them the license but not give it to them and not allow them to copy it.

When I went to the other dealership I told him I would show it to him but would not let me drive the car. You would think that they would be nicer to someone who wants to bu a car.

-You need to show then the drivers licence to test drive the car

-Never give your credit card up until you sign the contract to buy.

- Never give a phone number, give a e-mail address.

The Reasons

1. To ensure that you are a licenced driver.
2. To get your information for follow-up and drive you crazy.
3. Run a credit check on you to see if you can afford the car or steer you to
some other car.

Only 1. is valid...don't let them make copies

I'm sure having the copy is a requirement from the insuring companies, imagine if the car went missing, and they had no documentation of who took the vehicle.
By the prospective purchaser providing a drivers license, and the car lot making a a copy of what was provided to them , also states that the driver has agreed he/she has a valid drivers license , not under suspension etc., and if they were infact under suspension or whatever, there would be grounds to have them charged with providing false information

Went to two three car lots to buy a used car. Here is what happened.

1 Asked to test drive. Salesman said another salesman took keys home but if I left a deposit he would hold the car till tomorrow

2 Over priced by at least 4k said he would give me a deal and came down 500

3 After we negotiated a deal he tried to get me a to sign a contract that said he was not liable if mileage had been set back

No such thing as a honest used car dealer

WHY?????

As has been mentioned: to ensure you have a valid license as well as for insurance reasons

Also, should you just drive off with their car they have your info to hand over to the authorities.

While they don't need to copy your info for the first reason they do need to for the other two reasons.

Anytime I've gone car-shopping and they've asked for contact info I tell them that if they call me for any reason they will have lost the sale as I can make my own decisions as to what I wish to buy. Worked so far. :)

Here in NY if they give you the keys and do not bring back the car, you did not steal it.

I am still shopping for a car as well and had to give info as well. I learned though to tell them I am hardly home and to e-mail me. I can read them or delete them. Gotten less harassing phone calls this way.

Coming along

Now most commons is ridiculous.
I been to 6 dealers when I bought my car, the used guy who sell every model under the sun..said:
"I have to come with you for insurance purpose and I will ride shot gun" never asked for DL.

But the label dealer who might sell a few other manufactures cars wanted my CC and DL. I never gave him my phone number, but for the DL he was writing the info on the contract with some lame excuse
" it is a requirement from MTO,, blah blah..."
and the clown drove with us during the test.

That is BS.
