I'm having a mild argument with an acquaintance. It refers to nicknames. I believe that a person cannot choose their own nickname. A nickname must come from another person. This person believes one can choose their own nickname, and do so in a willy-nilly fashion, i.e., today I have decided I want to be called "Bluto", or whatever. Tomorrow, I might be "Otter", or whatever.

What do folks say?

Nobody ever gave me one, so I chose my own. It stuck, and that's now what my nick is. Never did I think for an instant that it was a valid one, and I feel a true sense of failure that I am so bland that I never inspired my friends to give me a real one. ;)

Nickname must by definition be granted upon an individual by a second party. This nickname can be based on one of many factors. For example:

A Physical Characteristic. Either Flattering or un-flattering.
ie: MEAT (from Porky's)
or Pinky (dude you're so white your dick is fluorecent pink)
or the Two and 1/4 inch Monster

A Habit or Tendency:
The Reefer : need I say more?
Dirk-Digger (for someone that likes to pick his ass)

An Embarrassing or Humiliating situation the individual has experienced:
Prison-Beatch-Boy!

A mental or physical condition
Gonorreah-Bob!
Leaky-dicky-Jim
Twitchy
Pepe-Le-Stinky
Cheese-Dick!

You cannot pick your nickname. Unless you can claim to be able to beat up just about anybody who says otherwise. And then back up that claim.

Reminds me of the scene from the classic Animal House when the are handing out nicknames to the new pledges who were accepted to Delta house.

Bluto Blutarsky: "Your new nickname is now...err...ummm... Flounder!
Stephen Furst: Flounder??? ...why Flounder?

Bluto: "Why not!!!!"

I'm glad you picked up on my Animal House reference, but you have the scene wrong. It is Pinto, aka Larry, aka Tom Hulce in a pre-Mozart role, who questions Bluto. The bit with Flounder goes like this:

Bluto: "Dorfman, I've been giving this a lot of thought. From now on, your Delta Chi name will be 'Flounder'".

Flounder (puzzled): "Flounder?"
