Heyyy.

Anyone here have any idea of what Radio personalities here in Toronto make? I'm talking guys like Dean Blundell, or Bob McCown, etc. I keep hearing conflicting opinions on this, so if anyone is in the know please let me know as this has always interested me.

Thanks

I think the main morning people - the guys who really bring in the advertising dollars make pretty good coin.

I've heard in the area of 300 k a year for Derringer plus bonuses. But his sidekicks - Bill and Ryan - probably allot less.

Believe it or not, CBC 1 is the Number One rated radio station in the mornings in Toronto, followed by CHUM, CHFI, and Q107.

Top personalities can also do voice overs, etc. Another source of income.

I remember when poor Martin Streek killed himself, he was living in a condo on Broadview. Not exactly Forrest Hill, so based on his lifestyle, I'd guess a guy like him to be in the 80 to 100k a year slot.

I think the radio industry is extremely vicious and they fire radio personalities every other week. It's a case where the radio stations themselves (and the corportations that own them) are quite old school in their approach to doing business - the less you pay your people the better.

I knew a woman who worked for the City TV empire as a producer for a number of years and she would complain that it was an incredibly competative environment where you never felt secure and the money was shit, and there was always some 20 year old tart who was willing to do her job for free. Not a good place to be.

I'd suggest it's a lot lower than the $300k cited.

Probably a lot closer to $50-75 k for a few of the very top personalities in Toronto.

Most radio personalities get a lot less than that. A regular DJ might get $20-30k if they're lucky.

And no job security.

I would say Bob McCown makes close to 500k per year. He has been a sports talk show host for over 30 years and his ratings are stellar.

20-30K?

Again, you could be right. BUt I've partied with Todd from the Dean Blundell show...and he's not the main guy but he has a BMW and has a pretty sick condo downtown so he must pull in somewhat DECENT coin.

20-30k is way, way off. Any good lead morning show personality is easy 6 figures - $250-$300 is not an extreme in Toronto...I know of one that pulled in over $750k (but that is extreme). The major expense a radio station has is staff - on air personalities and sales/management. Their product cost is very, very low - they sell air. Revenue all comes down to ratings, so the price for top talent tends to get bid up high. When Standard Broadcast sold to Astral media for just over 1 Billion!!, they were bottom lining over 30% - that's unheard of in any industry...so there's money around for talent.

I mostly listen to AM640. I would guess by the way the hosts live that they do ok. This is only by what they let out. Example cars or general areas they live and vacations they take. I know people try to keep up with the Joneses or in this case the Mccowens. I would say for the top guys $100K plus and other runts that work harder shifts $50K. Don't forget the big guys do other endorsements and work extra shows on other networks.

you'd be very surprised!

Derringer makes in excess of $500k annually and he has a contract.
By comparison Kim Mitchell is around $100k.
Smaller stations like Y108, Rock 95, 97.7 Htz fm the top people all earn less than $50k annually.
For the most part radio pay shit unless u make it into the top 5% or better.

from those in the industry...

...that I know personally, I was informed that Erin Davis was pulling in over 500K/year. Definitely the range from someone like Derringer as well

I have seen Derringer driving his BMW M6 at the Aurora Canadian Tire. I think that he is probably doing okay - his kids (the oldest one anyways) also go to a private school that I know other parents that send their kids to.

LOL.

I know some top show hosts personally, and they're nowhere near what folks are claiming here. And just because someone drives a nice car doesn't mean they're making a mint: these aren't public servants; the car companies and dealerships are allowed to give them a better price than you or I would get.

You think public servants are well paid?

Only the top top ones.

David Miller is raking in all of 160 grand a year and as much as I think he's an idiot, the job should pay more than that.

Top Radio personalities (main morning person) are very well paid, but as said, after the top ones, it drops down quite severely.
