I remember seeing a picture of him standing under the rim, with his arms hugging both sides of the backboard. Nice guy, but I always had ther impression that his body grew up too fast and that something could go wrong. 47 is way too young to die.

Here's an excellent story about his life and humanitarian efforts: http://www.kansascity.com/2010/05/29/1980177/manute-bol-deserves-more-recognition.html

PS - Bol died of kidney and/or liver failure (sources vary on which) and a rare skin disease (Stevens–Johnson syndrome) he acquired while doing more philanthropic work in Sudan.
A youtube video that captures what an incredible human being Manute Bol was:

Condolences to his family and friends. Rest in peace.

Apparently, very tall people don't live long. Even the great Wilt Chamberlain died at 63 which isn't exactly old age. The theory is that the heart has to work extremely hard to pump blood the length of a 7 foot body.

Manute Bol was perhaps my favorite NBA player ever. When he was younger, in Africa, he killed a lion with a spear.

The death of Manute Bol is a tragic loss to the people of Sudan. People who could use advocates like Mr Bol. Hopefully someone will continue on his foundation.
