I have decided to take the plunge. Right now I use only newsgroups but I guess torrent is the future. My search here turned up surprisingly few hits and I wonder if I am using search correctly (just typed in the single word torrent and hit enter)

Is there a preference for a good (free) client? I got too many hits on google so I thought it would just be better to ask actual users. A pointer to a website is fine too.

Is there ancilliary software I need to get as well? For example with the newsgroups, you also need Winrar, QPAR, sometimes TMPG, HJSplit and so on.

TIA.

I use BitComet for downloads and Mininova for most of my torrent links. It really depends on the types of subject matter you're looking to acquire. You won't find much in the way of explicit material on Mininova.

Have used Bitcomet for years and recently Utorrent. Both are good.

Torrents are OK but this past year got into Newsgroups and find them by far superior to Torrents. Much more content and variety available in Newsgroups.

Not always.
Time Warner gives their customers 5GBs/month free from Giganews, with their internet service. That's plenty for me.
Some other ISPs do the same.
Give them a call and ask.
Otherwise you have to pay for a newsgroup subscription.

I use utorrent and I'm happy with it. I'm not a techie, either. It had to be easy to install. You'll also want winrar to unpack compressed jpeg folders, and vlc to play avi files. Also a bigger hard drive now you can download more porn than you have time or energy to jerk off to.
Register at puretna and emornium.us, (not empornium.com), for more porn torrents than you know what to do with. they also have preview screens so you get a clue what you're downloading, unlike btjunkie.
The first month after starting using this, I got a big surprise from my isp, a big bill for too much bandwidth. I was allowed 10gigs up and 10 down, but didn't know there was a limit at all, so went way over at $10 a gig, and now pay a little more monthly for more bandwidth.
I used to use FreeAgent for newsgroups, but haven't been on the usenet for quite a while. It was getting so jammed up with spammers, only the moderated groups were worth bothering with.

Been pretty happy using GrabIt for newsgroups. Still use usenet but see it's not as good as before. It used to be the best place for any type music from the 50s to today's current releases. Used to get entire music albums @ 320 bitrate in a minute or two. The last couple months much of their music content has been removed. Glad I got all I ever wanted before the content was scaled down.

Utorrent.........if you also do edonkey cirquit Lphant will do both.
I do have interesting issue with utorrent (or probably any torrent client for that matter). It seems to hang my router everyday cuz I got lots of downloads happening (20-30 downloads approx). Too many network connections. The Router vendors do not have their own fixes.

I have tried this with DLINK and LINKSYS routers. The only solution I found on google was to replace the firmware with a freeware one that makes it a Linux box which you can add some scripts and then it eliminates these router hangs.

Anyone else ran into this issue and have a good solution?

By the way, I have never done an edonkey or even a regular donkey. Hows that feel?
