I recently bought a notebook off someone who reformatted it for me with WinXP.

Little did they realize they re-installed a fresh copy of WinXP over the already installed version of WinXP.

Now, when I boot it up I get the Please chose the version of Windows you would like to load and both say Windows XP Proressional.

How do I go about removing one of them?

I agree with ASN. If you haven't already spent precious time loading software and data, now's the time for a clean start. But before you attempt, make sure you have the necessary drivers handy. Its common for LAN drivers to be needed and without the internet, its tough to download updated drivers.

If you are not comfortable with a reinstall, you could edit the boot.ini file but my guess is that you won't be comfortable with that either. But live on the wild side.. what ya got to lose?

Best of luck.

Why? Partitions are not a necessary thing unless you plan to re-install the software over and over and over.
Repartitioning will remove completely anything in the boot sector, several times I had the same happen to me and just formatting didn't remove the booting option choice, re-partitioning did. Re-partioning this way is only meant to compleatly clear the hard drive.

Are you sure you have two copies installed? Just because there are two entries in the boot list doesn't necessarily mean both are taking up space on your hard drive: it's possible to have both entries share executables.

Actually you can just change the boot.ini, and remove the offending line you don't need to reformat.........
