I'm sure Southern Man played a part but it was the Neil Young song Alabama that got Lynyrd Skynyrd's goat. To make amends Neil wrote Powderfinger which which met with LS's enthusiastic approval.

The song is about General Sherman's gunboats crossing the Tennessee River.

It's about a celebrity but not a musician. The song is in reference to her relationship with Warren Beatty. It's commonly thought that the song is about Mick Jagger because he sings back up on the song as he was 'dating' Carly Simon at the time of recording.
