"A New York man who spent three years behind bars at Rikers Island without being convicted of a crime has taken his own life, his attorney told CNN.

Kalief Browder was a 16-year-old sophomore when he was arrested, and later charged with second-degree robbery [allegedly stealing a backpack]. He was released in 2013 when the charges against him were dropped."

He should not have been taken to Rikers. Clearly the justice system failed this young man. He should have sued the State who made him rot in that hell hole for 3 years. What I'd like to know is a) was there a bail hearing b) who the fuck was his lawyer and c) who was advocating for him (family,friends,pastor...anyone)

My 7 year old niece could raise $3K if she needed to. I'm sorry but not only did the system fail him so did his personal support network. Goodness gracious.

I remember reading his story last year, before his suicide. His family couldn't afford the bail. $3000
John Oliver just did a show on focusing on bail. As usual - very interesting.

Have any of you watched the docuseries on Netflix yet? If so, are you as outraged as I am?
