He does deserve credit for finally coming around:

http://www.thestar.com/news/article/1179884--surprise-mayor-rob-ford-appears-at-gay-event

Toronto Mayor Rob Ford shocked gays, their parents and friends Thursday by appearing at a flag-raising event at city hall.

Ford had sent his regrets to organizers of the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia.

It is the first time Ford has appeared at a gay-related event, despite huge pressure after skipping all Pride events last year.

Councillor Gord Perks, who was to speak on behalf of Ford, instead introduced the mayor, who read the proclamation.

“Way to go mayor!” one man yelled before Ford spoke.

Asked how he felt being at the event, Ford said “Great” and stood back with councillors to listen to other speakers.

They included Councillor Janet Davis, who paid tribute to her gay son and said this was her first time at the ceremony as a member of PFLAG, a support group for parents of lesbians and gays.

About 20 minutes after arriving, with speakers still talking, Ford and his entourage suddenly set off at a brisk walk toward a side door to the council office area. A pack of reporters followed, asking the mayor why he changed his mind and if he’ll go to any Pride events but he remained mum.

He must be scared. But what does that matter if it gets him moving in a more sensible direction. Best thing he's done so far.

Well good for him. And props to the crowd also. They were fairly tolerant of his presence with even a bit of small applause mixed in.

The entire gay community has extensive and often very personal experience, often with their own parents and family, with people who at first would not accept them, but then gradually came around. They know how to show the love when someone does the right thing, and how to let the past be the past. They'll outright cheer for him if he shows up for any more of their events. If he ever does show up at the parade, this year or next, he'll get a hero's welcome.

I'll be more cynical, and go with 'a conversion on the way to Damascus' (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conversion_on_the_Way_to_Damascus), or the next election, as the case may be. It may be cynical or genuine, and he deserves credit for not being a completely intractable asshat, but how much credit should you really get for doing something that you should have done in the first place? (Find the time to poke your head up at one of the events of a major week long festival that is a huge draw for the city.)

This is hilarious!

Now Mayor Ford, is being praised by the very same people who criticized him the most harshly on this topic.

If this was an avenue for political attack against himself as Mayor, he just slammed the door shut on this flank.

You got to wonder if this whole episode was orchestrated by the Mayor's office. He is not as dumb as he looks.

The main drawback about Mayor Ford, is not his penny pinching agenda. If he is perceived too much of a country hick, that would hurt him in this city. But now, he's a sophisticated Toronto resident, maybe even a closet metrosexual.

He just won the next election. Mayor Ford's only weakness was his persona. Well, they can't attack him on persona anymore. The gay, is on the top of the political correctness pyramid. If Mayor Ford stands with them there, then he is untouchable too.

The Mayor Ford can only lose the next election on his agenda, which is a three part process. Just repeat the same three slogans.

1. "Subways, subways, that's what the people want, subways"

2. "Cut the gravy".

3. "Nuts, nuts, nuts!"

The facts changed. When the facts change, I change my mind. What do you do?

Apparently you look at every issue in purely partisan terms and don't actually base your views on the facts? Previously he was boycotting PRIDE, and that absolutely made him a bigot. Now he appears to have developed, at least a little bit, and he absolutely deserves credit for that. It's not much different than Obama's about face on gay marriage--previously he was against it, now he's for it. And that's a good thing, in both cases.

People do grow and sometimes correct their deficiencies, and when they do it should be recognized. Ford wouldn't be the first, and won't be the last person to confront their homophobic bigotry and grow out of it. Well, that may be going too far--let's hope he's growing out of it.

Though I wouldn't take wagers on 'personal growth' vs. 'refining his public relations skills' vs. 'learning to listen to his handlers'.

He doesn't deserve any credit.

It's an outright lie.

When you see and hear him, his conduct is like someone is holding a gun to his lower back.

He did it simply for damage control. Not because he believes in what he's saying.

It makes him an even bigger (bigger) hypocrite.

Well, yes....

That's because the mayor changed his position on the issue. If we're going to criticize the mayor when we think he's doing the wrong thing, then it's reasonable to applaud his actions if he changes course and does the right thing.

It only drives more cynicism when we're not prepared to applaud politicians for doing the right thing.

He looked very uncomfortable. He hurriedly read a prepared proclamation. He then sat uncomfortably thru a coupla speakers('when the fuck is this going to finish?" repeatedly throbbing thru 'his' brain ala last midnight's ice-cream headache). Surmising it wasn't going to finish soon enough to his liking 'he' got up and was wisked quickly away by his 'handlers', all the while skillfuly evading and dodging questions and reporters. That was the extent of the sudden dawning of 'his' epiphany. Hardly, praiseworthy considering 'his' sordid past on the subject.

Purely and simply, an obvious transluscent and politically motivated gambit designed to stem the further erosion of 'his' political future. Face the facts, 'he' did the absolute bare minimum so as not to 'outrage' his Ford Nation 'base' base whilst attempting to demonstrate a beastly, bulging hamfisted grasping onto the slimmest of threads connecting the 'beast' to the mosaic of society.

'fuji', I'm asbsolutely shocked that you are so 'unaware'.

Be clear, this man is a documented bigot, liar and bully who has also engaged in 'criminal' behaviour and no amount of obviously politcally motivated and staged epiphanies can change the beast.

Stay tuned. Pride flag raising ceremony coming somewhere near 'you' on June 22. Full-on, in 'your' face Pride Week 'brain-hemorrhaging' events 'clogging' up 'your' streets.

Homophobe-boy, homophobe-boy watcha' 'you' gonna do, whatcha' gonna do when Pride Week comes for 'you'?

Did you spend all of last night working on that sentence?

Ok, so whose cock does he have to suck to get some respect?
No one.

It won't happen. It's not a possibility. It's out of any realm of reality.

He doesn't give any respect anywhere so he'll never receive it.
