Aunt has crappy ass Rogers internet.
She's renting their cable modem at $3/month or some shit.

Now I called them today asking if I it's okay to use another modem since we don't want to pay a rental fee and he went on some stupid tangent saying...
"well it's not our modem and if you contracted a virus and it then got on our system, you would be held responsible" wtf???
A modem is a modem isn't it?

I'm assuming that what he essnetially meant was if you're not using our product and something gets on the system, we're coming after you.
But if you pay us the monthly rental fee and something comes onto the system, it's okay?

I'm so glad i'm with www.teksavvy.com Fuck Bell and Fuck Rogers.

Anyone use a cable modem with Rogers that isn't rented or bought from them?
I'm assuming it should be fine as long as we stick with a well known brand...?

I used to test modems at Rogers. They have fairly specific brands they use but I don't think it would really matter.

The virus thing is a pile of crap. I know thousands of viruses get transmitted through their network every day (and every other IPS). Rogers is so paranoid about their public image, even if their was a problem they would never make it public.

With that said you have to check you service agreement it may not allow you to use other equipment. If you ever had a connection problem it is unlikely they would offer much support unless it was a rental modem.

I was at TiderDirect and they have Linksys and some other lesser known brand modems that can be substituted for Rogers. These off market modems infact offer higher throughput (10 mbps)... I am not sure if I can buy and replace Rogers Modem. And will I get faster speed?

There is a variance between the type of modem Rogers gives you but in the end they cap it at their end so it doesn't really matter.

Rogers tests cable modems in association with CableLabs, the certification body for CableTV equipment.

Many modems have failed such testing and are therefore not supported by Rogers.

If you want to buy a modem, select one from this list of approved modems.

Your are looking for "CM" Product types, that support DOCSIS 2.0, and 1.1 . (spec D2.0,D1.1).

Modem Upgrade?

Anyone else get a notice from Rogers to upgrade their modem? I've checked some other boards on the next and seems legit but somehow my distrust of Rogers runs even deeper.

Yes, I was asked to upgrade a few months ago.

I'm not on Rogers but

Bell finally sent me my new modem yesterday. It would not work, and despite being told that they had switched the card in the CO in October, the excuse was that the line was not ready for the "new platform".

About an hour ago, my 'net went down. It has just come back, but only for the new modem, the old Nortel grey box does not work anymore. So I guess that the technology can be used the ensure that you have to be very careful what hardware you plug in.

download yesterday was 864 kb/s and upload 107 kb/s latency of 145 ms
download today............2777 kb/s and up......643 kb/s latency of 143 ms

I did not change the service or pay more. I only changed the modem. I am shocked at what a difference in speed there is.

I guess this means 3X the porn off Newsnet!

Bell was (or did by now) upgrade their lines.
Thought it was supposed to be the 5th.
I'm with Teksavvy.com (they resell Bell's lines) for cheaper, for the EXACT same service(s).
Gonna try some downloads myself right now.
Glad i read this.

It is legit.
If you have a Lancity modem or one of the older models that do not support DOCSIS 1.1, you will be asked to exchange it.

Sits in a corner all alone
Buying your own cable modem is nice but there is one caveat: be sure you're keeping it for the extreme longterm. Rogers notified me a while ago that they are upgrading my modem for no additional charge (apparently they put in new switches outside my apartment, and wanted to provide new modems to take advantage of that). Buying your own cable modem kinda robs you of that benefit: my friend bought his for $150 several years ago and it is a really old looking clunker now.....

Don't think it's worth it to buy the modem. If something goes wrong with it, you can get it replaced at no cost from Rogers, but if it's yours tough luck. Also upgrades, and other things to consider, but the viruses thing is obviously bullshit by an inferior/imbecile tech/CS guy who wanted to get you to stay renting.
