Remember Roxana Saberi the U.S. - Iranian dual national who was arrested for buying a bottle of wine now the Iranian Government has charged her with espionage and says she be tried next week!

Miss Saberi who grew up in Fargo, is a graduate of Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota with a B.A. in Mass Communication and French, she was the 1997 Miss North Dakota and was one of the last 10 finalists in the 1997 Miss America Pageant.

Unfortunately her story is a warning as to a drawback of dual Nationality, inasmuch as the Iranian government is asserting that as an Iranian National she is not entitled to Consular Representation.

Iran has been repeatedly criticized for arresting journalists and suppressing freedom of speech. The government has arrested several Iranian-Americans in the past few years, citing alleged attempts to overthrow the government.

Sad story but I don't have overwhealming sympathy for people who go to areas that are hostile environments or have different rules and get themselves in trouble...

True and as I mentioned a particular issue for dual nationals to consider. HOWEVER, it is both disgusting and immoral that this woman may well be executed merely as a pawn in internal Iranian political disputes.

Too bad she didn't have Japanese rather than Iranian dual nationality (her mother is of Japanese ancestry).

Does the U.S. allow dual citizenship? Is this permissible only for naturalized U.S. citizens?

Yes, and "sort of". Renunciation of U.S. Citizenship in most cases has to be explicit but it is easier to be caught in a situation the U.S. considers to be the functional equivalent of explicit for native born citizens who voluntarily acquire another citizenship than for naturalized citizens who already have another nationality or for native born citizens who have also had another nationality from birth.
