Just wondering if anyone has a quick fix for removal of rust from my 10 speed bicycle, namely on the chrome portion of handlebars...and ways/means to prevent re-occurance.

If it is chrome here is an old, old remedy.

It really works and is very inexpensive.

Get a damp rag and rub in a little dirt from your flower garden. Then rub down the chrome and you will see all of the rust come off.

After simply clean with some fresh water, and Bingo!!! All gone.

CLR to clean it up. Store your bike indoors to prevent it. Rust is caused due to exposure to the elements. If your bike does get wet, wipe it down.
My only other suggestion would be to upgrade your bike. 10 speed bikes have all but gone the way of the dinosaur. You can get a good quality 21 speed full suspension bike from places like Canadian Tire or SportChek, which will be much more comfortable too.

It's been good to know ya
I just leave my bikes inside and never ride them in the rain and if by accident I take them out in the rain or get stuck in rain I immediatly dry them off with paper towel. I've never gotten a bit of rust on my bikes yet. But, if I ever do thanks for the hints. :)

If your bike still has chrome handlebars it's time to get a new one. Everything alu or carbon fiber, no rust problems.

Fireplace ash is mostly metal, because metal won't burn.

Metal won't burn, that's true, but what are you throwing into your fireplace besides wooden logs?

You have to be careful with anything too abrasive because it will scratch the chrome finish also.
