I've resolved never to buy a phone on Contract from the Carriers again; I buy direct from the Manufacturer and go on a BYOD plan.

I have an Order for a Samsung S24 for $779.99 + HST (after $400 promotional discount); which is a better deal than you get Financing with any of the Big 3.

Alternatively, I could wait until Black Friday and purchase a OnePlus 12 instead; this phone isn't offered by any of the Carriers, but it does support all the major bands needed for LTE/5G. And it does come with an IR Blaster; I currently use a TCL 20 Pro, which has an IR Blaster, and I absolutely love it.

I've been watching a review by Flossy Carter on the OnePlus 12 and the cameras look amazing:

Which would you choose?

IMHO Samsung is a better choice as it is whitelisted by Canadian carriers for VOLTE and wifi calling, One Plus might or might not be whitelisted depending on the carrier. Whitelisting is BS but this is Canada so we put up with it like it is normal.

$799 is real good! Great price for a flagship.
I had a OnePlus 7 years ago, I think it was their second generation or third, really liked the OS, very plain "vanilla" no bloatware. Then I stumbled onto China's version of "Apple" Xiaomi, the OS is nice, the builds are sleek, but what I like most is that some of their models offer expandable memory and audiojack (not a fan of earpods, I need corded earpieces, I lose stuff easily so I need that cord 🤦‍♂️). I don't usually like the crazy looks of lenses on phones but OnePlus made this one look good. I wish they had an audiojack, that's a minimum for me personally. Flossy is a koook man, I always wonder if he ever did time and for what. 😂 Him and his damn smell tests too. lol
Did a search, never heard of TCL, expandable memory and audiojack 👍nice and slim with infinity like edges? Where did you buy it, Ali?

No, bought the TCL 20 Pro from Fido (Rogers); good enough phone for day to day use. I believe I got two major Android updates. I find my Apps aren't working as reliably as they used to, so it's time to upgrade. I'm probably going to keep it.

$799 for the S24; but I had to order it in one of their Online Exclusive colours; even though I had an Estimated Delivery Date of yesterday, the CS Agent from Samsung over chat says it is going to take up to 4 weeks minimum. Samsung has already charged my VISA for the order; even though they haven't shipped it yet. I can cancel the order before it is shipped if I want.

As for the OnePlus 12; 16GB/512RAM version is $1199, but they have a Back to School Promo right now for $130; and they also apparently will recycle any POS phone you have for a Credit of $150; which drops the price down to $919.00. Or I could wait until Black Friday and see if the deal gets better.

Currently have a plan with Chatr for $34/50GB at LTE speeds (I was going to go with Public, but they can't seem to do something as basic as send me a SIM card in the mail). I wish the Rogers sub-brands actually offered 5G. May eventually switch to Public if I want a 5G plan; I've read some complaints about dropped calls with Public.

I know you got the OP12, but I recommend checking out Moto G Stylus 2024, I had it for a few days and fuck me that's a nicely designed phone except for one stupid thing, the back, faux leather, they should have made it plastic or glass, because any leather wears and cracks/flakes over time. Otherwise, very clean OS, maybe slightly laggy, but you can't get open Developer Options (moto locked that down) to turn off the animation scaling.

Either way, that OP12 is sick.

I saw the new TCL, not cheap either, it's with Bell but I love the design, so smooth and the audiojacks and exp. memory. lol

FYI, it is actually possible to get 5G BYOD plans on Bell for $30.

https://www.bell.ca/Mobility/switch...NT=MOB_MDM_TIL_P2PBelltoBell_Upsell_071624_TS

The only way to get theses plans is to be on Bell Prepaid first; it's known as a Prepaid to Postpaid (P2P) migration; these plans are not available otherwise. If you want to Finance a device, the plan will be $50.

I had one of these; (not as good as the current offers); Bell even threw in Crave with Ads for free; but Bell being Bell wanted to jack up the price by 15% after just 10 months so I left for Chatr.

One Plus was great when it first came out, became shit, and then has slowly recovered its quality.

I agree and this OP12 does look sick. Can't stress it enough, I wish manufacturers at the very least would put audiojacks in all their phones.

How is Chatr for reception? I should be checking whose towers they use, but fuck it's a forum, it's for conversation. How's customer service? All automated? I'm with Koodo and I hate their service, having to deal with AI bot chatting to get a service call.
When you call do you actually get someone live on the phone?

Chatr is Rogers prepaid brand. Service has been good so far. I got the SIM card in the mail and did the activation and number port myself online and it was seamless. I've been only there for a week. I'm supposed to get next month for free, as that is the current promo.

There is no phone app; you have to manage your account using the website. Chatr does have live customer service. Since it is Rogers, all the Customer Service should be onshore; unlike Bell and Telus, who offshore everything to the Philippines.

Thing is, if you call in and ask them to do things you could have done yourself online, they hit you with BS service charges:

Administrative charges | chatr Mobile (chatrwireless.com)

I bring this up for one reason: if I ever wanted to port my number out, I need my Chatr account number. Apparently, you can't find that anywhere online. You have to call and ask them and they will give it to you.

Chatr has a charge of $8 for an "Account Information Request" - which if they are going to charge me for getting my account number, is a sneaky way to get customers to pay an Exit Fee if they ever want to leave. Fuck these cellphone companies. Maybe if I went to a Fido or Rogers store I could get them to look it up for me for free.

Well, I actually cancelled my order with Samsung (as I didn't want to wait 4 weeks) and ordered the OP12 instead. Placed the order for the OP12 on Tuesday; UPS delivered the phone this morning. Popped in the Chatr SIM Card and everything is working smoothly so far!

I tried to buy a Samsung phone a couple of years ago at Walmart. They would not let me buy it without a plan.
Then I went to Freedom to buy a Samsung phone and then purchase the prepaid talk and text. They would not let me buy the phone.
So, I crossed the street to another Freedom location and they let me phone the phone. I also bought the talk and text plan with them.
