Saturday evening, I had the chance to touch base with an old friend of mine- Ethan Moreau of the Edmonton Oilers. We talked about many things… perhaps the most interesting that I can share for discussion on the terb boards are the following (I tried to organize the thoughts as best as I could for y’all):
· The mongoloid trainer that has been a stalemate in Edmonton since back in the days of Wayne Gretzky and continues today is a brother of an ex-girlfriend of Wayne Gretzky. He apparently is 100% mentally useless to the team and they have another undercover trainer (stick-boy) to make sure everything gets done appropriately.
· Ethan admitted in last season’s playoffs that they never should have gotten past San Jose. In game 3, San Jose hit 3 posts in the 3rd period and 1 in OT. He said that woulda been the difference in the series. Anaheim had no gas left in the tank when it came time to play them.
· Rod Brind’Amour is one of the most feared guys to face in playoff hockey. His stare has become more penetrating than ole Messier’s. Many of the Oilers feared meeting him along the boards or in the corners. Ethan says if any team has a chance at defending their cup title in the last 5 seasons, it is Carolina.. even though their start was slow and much evident of a playoff hangover.
· Rod Brind’Amour’s Doctor is also a friend of Moreau’s- the Doc claims that Rod’s workout regiment has to be personally monitored by Doctors in presence because of the intensity. Rod could actually kill himself with the intensity in which he works out.
· There’s only about 2 or 3 guys on the Oilers roster that don’t currently take some sort of performance enhancing drug. Most of these drugs are prohibited in the Olympics, but, still legal for use in North America.
· To find evidence of performance enhancing drugs in the NHL (atleast among the Olympic elite), all one has to do is to follow how weak the performance of said given elite players are during the season leading up to the Olympics of those who have a chance at ‘making the Games’- usually after the Games, the performance increases… Mats Sundin, Zdeno Chara and Peter Forsberg are good examples. Where, on the other hand guys like Joe Thornton and Rick Nash have been known to carry clean nearly 100% of the time.
. Some non-steroid drugs include Thyroid pills and other metabolism adjusters... sleeping pills, anxiety pills... and ritalin!
· Zdeno Chara might be the best ‘scrapper’ in the league- though he often chooses not too fight.
· Joe Thornton, though is incredibly tough, has elected to not fight since having his cheekbone broken by Eric Lindros a few years ago. Smart move IMO. This is a big weakness of Jarome Iginla- though appreciated by the fans, it doesn’t win hockey games… Iginla is stubborn according to Moreau.
· Steroids aren’t the most common used drugs. Much contrary to what you’ll hear about in the media. The reason being, steroids can cause muscles to grow too fast leaving weak and injury prone fibres in the muscle tissue. Not a good mix for hockey players. Sometimes they are used to overcome surgery or injury, though.
· However, some frequent steroid users are: Jarome Iginla, Dion Phaneuf, Markus Naslund, Todd Marchant, Sean O’Donnell, Jason Chimera---- yeah, a large western conference list as that is what he knows best, I guess.
· Some (he named 3) referees are steroid users!!!
· Though many think Mike Peca is a steroid user, he hasn’t used in many years. He uses ‘other methods’ that can be explained in greater detail later.
· During the ‘flu’ outbreak within the Oilers dressing rooms of the 2nd round of playoffs last spring, an interesting story occurred… Against San Jose… games 1,2, and 3- players would go to the dressing rooms and insert IV bags into their veins at intermission and try to recoup their fluid and electrolyte loss due to fighting the flu while competing. They had the wives, coaching staff, Dr’s and trainers assist in STEPPING on the IV BAGS to PUMP the fluid into the veins at a faster rate!
· Chris Pronger’s wife is a huge ‘ice-queen’ and did not fit in at all in Edmonton… You just don’t go to games carrying Louis Vutton purses and fit in with the other player’s gf’s and wives…
· And yes, we all know what Chris Pronger did- his wife threatened to sue in divorce if they had to stay in Edmonton. The players really liked Chris but think he did a big dumb ass move by fucking that little university chick for months.
· Also- many players don’t get married during their career even though they have serious, long term gf’s… they are often just too busy to be distracted from their efforts.
· The players avoid partaking in the action known as the terb coined term ‘hobbying’ in their home town in favour for out of town games. Rink employed cheer girls are common delicacies enjoyed by mostly the younger players- rookies and sophomores… The older players prefer to indulge in fantasy providers…. And generally spend more $$$ on entertainment.
· Gambling addiction is quite rampant among the nhl players.
· Many of the elite NHLers agree that they don’t want their kids to make the NHL.
· Many invest money in the Turks and Caicos avoiding paying income taxes on their capital gains.
. Cocaine and alcohol is rampant around the NHL. players, execs, etc.. many use.... but in contradiction to this- most hockey players are HEALTH NUTS.
. Many players have adjusted to the 'new game' by losing bodyfat... some players play with as low as 4%!!! this, you can imagine is much harder to do for the older players without any drug aids.
Hope that helps provide some interesting insight into the game that wouldn’t come out in traditional media for the most part…
Enjoy.
PS- he shared much much more info but, how long do you want me to go for...
it was an interesting 45minutes, let me tell ya.
