Such is the wonderful world of business really. If you perform and improve the company overall via your efforts, you will find yourself still employed. If not, you will find yourself fired.

Sports is perhaps the only world where you can be "performing" some of the time and be considered very good. For example, a baseball batter who hits the ball safely 30% of the time (.300 batting average) is considered very good. A goalie who saves the puck 85% of the time is considered not bad. Stats like this in the "real" business world get you fired or at the very least action planned.

xarir - I agree with what you are saying in a business sense, but if Lalime saved those two extremely soft goals in Game 7 or Smolinski did not score on his own net in Game 5 Martin would most likely keep his job. How does one control those actions of others?

It's offical. Martin has been fired by the Sens. They made the playoffs in all eight of his years here but went out in the first round in 5 of 8 years. If the Sens had beaten the Leafs...chances are Quinn would be the coach getting fired.

GlavaMan - agreed.

All of the coaches have also been fired except assistant coach Perry Pern, his specialty being the powerplay, which was dismal in the playoffs.

You're right - sometimes it's just not possible. But on the other hand, this is perhaps what best defines the Lonliness of Command. Whatever happens on your watch is your responsibility. If ti's all good, you come out smelling like the proverbial rose. If it's all bad, it's ultimately your fault because you were in a position to do something about it.

In Martin's case, (and I'll admit this is farfetched) he could have not started Lalime. Maybe Prusek (sp?) would have been a better goalie initially in game 7. Alternatively Martin could have shuffled his lines or sent out a different one against the Niewendyk line. Ultimately he was ain a position to do something before it happened. Yet things went sour (if you're a Sens fan) therefore he takes the fall.

It's not nice and it's not necessarily fair sometimes, but that's the way she goes. I do feel sorry for him; he did well in the regular season after all. And last year I seem to remember he did pretty well in the playoffs too.

I'm not a Sen's fan but I liked Jacques Martin. Let's face it, Ottawa completely shallacked Toronto in shots on goal ( thus the reason Toronto has zero chance against the Flyer's ). If Eddie's playing for Ottawa, the Leaf's are hitting the links this afternoon. The only thing Jacques Martin could have done differently is play goal himself.

Actually if Eddie is playing for Ottawa I would think the Senators would be such huge favorites to win the Cup it wouldn't even be funny.

In Ottawa, senators can’t be fired. But in the nation’s hockey crazed capital, Senators can be.

Which explains the not unexpected fate of coach Jacques Martin, who was abruptly terminated as coach of the city’s N.H.L. team on Thursday.

He lost his job just two days after the Sens. lost yet another playoff series to the Leafs. It was the fourth time in five seasons the Senators have lost to the Blue and White in the post season – and it will be Martin’s last.

“In order to take the next step, towards winning a Stanley Cup, we must select a new face, a new voice with a fresh approach and with new ideas,” G.M. John Muckler explains. “It's like the oldest cliche in the world in our industry, you can't fire 29 people. Is it right? Sometimes it's not, but I know one thing that's right. We needed a change.”

The 51-year-old Martin had been with the team for 8 1/2 years, making him that rarest of animals: a coach with longevity.

He’d previously led the St. Louis Blues to the Norris Division championship in 1986-87, and came to Ottawa from an assistant coaching position with Colorado in 1996. He was named coach of the year in the ‘98-99 season – the same year Pat Quinn was chosen runner-up.

But the end was in sight for the veteran bench boss, who failed to fire up his team despite their obvious talent.

Shouting could be heard from the Sens. dressing room after their final loss of the season, although players deny it was the angry voice of owner Eugene Melnyk. But it quickly became clear something was about to give – and now it has.

Ottawa won four of 12 playoff series and two of their last four under Martin. But their continual failure to take the next step – especially against the hated Leafs – has baffled brass and fans alike. Now, it will be someone else’s problem to solve.


Assistant coach Don Jackson and goaltending coach Phil Myre were also fired. Perry Pearn, another assistant, wasn't let go, but Muckler confirms he won’t be a candidate to replace Martin.

Actually, if Eddie was playing for Ottawa, even Ranger68 would have said the Senators out-played the Leafs.

What strikes me as odd is that it was Muckler that made key trades to improve the Sens down the stretch. These trades didn't pan out and as a matter of fact it was Muckler that stated that Lalime was his goalie rather than go after Kolzig. Eugene should have dropped the axe on Muckler's head.

This is a bad move on Gene's part. Muckler and McKlar should be the ones to go and then have someone else evaluate Martin. There was considerable tension between Martin and Muckler and aparently it boiled over in the dressing room after the game Tuesday.

Martin asked for a new goalie at the start of the season and Muckler said no and that's been a sore spot all year....Spezza's role has been another one. Based on Lalime's play alone, Muckler should be gone.

I don't like the Sens much, but this is a step backwards.
