When life is upended as it has been, people are much more vulnerable to conspiracy theories etc. And, from there the trolls and hostile nations ramp up their misinformation campaigns to exacerbate the problem. And from there, you amp up people who then proceed to threaten violence, and the trolls and hostile nations sit back and laugh as their "useful idiots" damage science, trust, and truth. Because then strongmen seem viable (e.g., Putin, Xi, Orban, Ergodan, etc). And from there, the battle cry becomes "blind obedience will set us free!"
It almost feels like nobody has heard of the “middle path”? Everything here is either black or white, left or right! Doesn’t that leave a lot in the middle (which is where I would suspect a majority of the people live)? Or may be, as someone has already suggested, it is the “extremists” that end up posting the most here, while the rest of us just lurk and enjoy the spectacle (oh admit it: as painful as some of this is, it is not a bad way to waste some time during this lockdown)!
