You have to learn to listen to the chords when you sing. Singing in tune is very important. The whole thing is "pitchy". Also songs need melody. The melody should move with the chords in conjunction with the lyrics. Its not easy, but thats why not everyone can write a good song. Concentrate on pitch. As far a writing goes break down some of your favorite songs into thier component parts: intro, verse, chorus, bridge, verse, outro. Each component of the song should support the other and lead the listener through the song making them want to hear more. The final payoff should be the chorus and out. All music follows certian conventions to bring the listener in. When you listen to music figure how the artist is using the basic parts to pull you in. Why do you like a song? figure out what you like in music and why. Unless you go through these excercises your music will be unfocused and people will not get what you are doing. Anyone can make music, its just alot of work, its not easy, but the important thing is to understand how music is constructed. This is all personal work that you don't need a coach or teacher for. Learn to listen to music on several levels at the same time hearing the melody, chord movement, beat, and structure. You will be surprised at how it changes the way you hear things.
