Shameless Jack Layton....

Did anyone else notice that Jack was front and centre at Wayne Gretzky's restaurant every time the CTV coverage of the Gold Medal game cut to Toronto for the remote crowd reactions? Smack dab in the middle of the screen, staring right at the camera each time. There was only one time that he had his back to the cam, but in that shot his wife had her smiling mug front and centre.

None of the broadcasters mentioned him, and given the CTV sports panel, they may have just not recognized him.

In previous games, CTV used Gretzky's for the same purpose. He must have seen it on TV, and gone there early to camp out front and centre, or used whatever influence he has to get the limelight seat.

Granted, Jack and Olivia already nauseated me.... but I found this to be extra shameless.

There is no bigger "Self-Promoter" in all of Canadian Politics than Jack Layton.

Unbelievable! While everyone is jumping up and down celebrating at about the 22 second mark, he is pulling someone's hand out of the way so he is the focus of the camera!

Meanwhile, Harper stayed completely off TV.
The differene is that Layton was physically moving a cheering fan's arm out of the way so he would be on the camera.

Don't pick on Harper, he was an innocent by-stander. Jack Layton was the real culprit.

Anyone who hates their Prime Minister hates their country.
Since he shut down the government to show up on the podium, there's no way anyone can call it 'picking on' Harper. Nobody ever asked for it louder.

Because the line about hating your country is so idiotic, do tell us your opinion of the little guy from Shawinigan. Or Trudeau

Or maybe so that he could see the screen?

So say you, with your personal psychic knowledge. The only thing we all know is that Harper and his family had the best VIP seats in Vancouver, all at our expense. Jacko either had to watch at home, or do like it seems one or two other folks chose to do and go to a sportsbar to watch.

This thread critiquing how a guy watched a game sure shows the believable pettiness of people obsessed with those they disagree with. Just imagine how they'd be howling if he said he'd gone to a movie instead.

Oh Canada.

Layton is a publicity whore as is his wife. Seeing his mug did sort of ruin the moment but hats off to CTV for not acknowledging him.

As far as Harper being on tv the obvious difference was that it was either a part of being part of the official party or it was the network seeking him out in the crowd rather than him seeking out the camera. Layton knows, on the other hand, that no one will seek him out so he resorts to this amateur hour stuff.

You keep repeating it because no one is listening to you ?

Its sort of sad that your only defense of Layton is to attack Harper

First, Harper is the Prime Minister. He was in Vancouver doing what he was supposed to be doing. I watched a lot the Olympics on TV, and I never once saw Harper being a camera whore. He was out visibly supporting Canadian athletes. He was actually pretty low key. Had he been less visible, I'm sure that people would have been screaming about that too.

Let me also say that I am politically agnostic.

My point was that Layton was not out to just enjoy a hockey game. He, or one of his supporters, had watched previous games and noticed that CTV cut to the Wayne Gretzky's crowd reaction quite frequently. So, he must have intentionally sought out that particular spot. He was not just some guy out to enjoy a hockey game. If that were the case, he would not have been looking straight at the camera every time it cut to Toronto. He was either fixated on it the entire time, or had the CTV guys tip him off. Nobody else in any other of the remote crowd shots was aware that they were on camera until several seconds after CTV switched to them.

I have always had the impression that Harper was basically an introvert who is uncomfortable with such things but knows he has to do them (both because he is PM and for partisan purposes).
On the other had, I get the impression that Layton actually likes being on camera. Even if he were not a politician, I suspect he would like getting on camera.
Of course these personality traits have nothing to do with running the country. However, they are amusing/interesting.

And most people find it a lot easier to attack personality traits than political agendas.
