I think they had no choice but to do this. Shanahan was surprised when he wasn't canned after last year's 1st round exit in 5 games.

I don't know if I demote Matthews, but I think it's gonna be a couple of the core four guys that will be leaving. They're gonna have to have a different way of thinking in a new way of doing things there they tried the old way long enough and it just failed in the end.

I agree Matthews as great a player as he is, is not captain material, but I think there would be a weird fallout if
they strip him of it at this point. Unless he totally buys into it.
What it also underscores is how serious the Leafs problems are regarding leadership and character, there isn't one other guy that I think
measures up to being a captain.
