I received a rather disturbing email today from a guy in the States.

He told me he would be here soon 4 biz,and could I find him a 14-year old to see.He told me 14 is the age of consent so there would be nothing wrong with it and oh,I would be paid well for delivering this child to him.
Went on to reassure me he wasnt LE,he would pay really well,etc.etc.

My first thought was to forward this to the police..........Should I?

yes.

My first thought is that it's either a hoax or a sting. Surely even pedophiles are smart enough not to solicit procurement at random! Although you didn't say whether he is a previous client, or even whether you knew that or not; if he is, he may have convinced himself since you saw him that you got on so well you'd do anything for him.

My second thought is not to snitch - that's my automatic reaction to this sort of thing. Nobody's actually hurt you or your interests; you don't even know whether the request is genuine ... why get involved? If the cops wanted you in uniform, they'd pay you a salary.

My third thought is that you may perhaps have very strong feelings on the matter (as an extreme example, I know some people who start thinking 'pedophile' if you so much as smile at kids playing on the street!) - and/or perhaps the eMail was more graphic and disturbing than you've summarized here.

My fourth thought is that forwarding the information might be worth some brownie points, which might come in handy at some time in the future. Venal, I know, and the sort of thing that prompted my second thought, but every now and then we all need a favour. Do you have any unofficial contacts with LE to whom you could pass this?

All in all (and subject to what was actually in the eMail and whether you know the quy!), I'll bet a nickel it's either a hoax or sting...or even a reporter preparing an expose of 'Toronto, the new city of the plain!'. But it's really something you have to make your own decision on and I can only hope the above helps you clarify the issues.

But gracious heavens, I've just had four thoughts in one day! I need to lie down and rest now!

14 is the age of consent but NOT for paid services. It's a given that the guy is sick but he might also be mistaken. Just in case he is mistaken, someone should email him back informing him that 18 is the age of consent for paid sexual services - or even better the police could email him.

Age of Consent

I thought maybe that guy was from some southern state and he made a mistake about Canadian laws. I started doing a little research and was VERY surprised at what I found.

Check this out:

http://www.ageofconsent.com/ageofconsent.htm

Scroll down to Canada. According to this site, in Canada the legal age of consent for Male-Female sex is 14. I can't believe this is our law! What the hell are those idiots in Ottawa thinking?

Dacor.

I believe you are correct Shiek. An 18 yr old would be charged with something, probably multiple things, if he had sex with a 14 yr old.

Parliamentary research group says:
CANADA'S LEGAL AGE OF CONSENT TO SEXUAL ACTIVITY
Revised 12 April 2001

The Criminal Code does not now criminalize consensual sexual activity with or between persons 14 or over, unless it takes place in a relationship of trust or dependency, in which case sexual activity with persons over 14 but under 18 can constitute an offence, notwithstanding their consent. Even consensual activity with those under 14 but over 12 may not be an offence if the accused is under 16 and less than two years older than the complainant. The exception, of course, is anal intercourse, to which unmarried persons under 18 cannot legally consent, although both the Ontario Court of Appeal(3) and the Quebec Court of Appeal(4) have struck down the relevant section of the Criminal Code.
According to Dacor's reference and confirmed by Interpol
Canadian Criminal Code
Under subsections 212(2) and (4) child prostitution is an offence
" (...) (2) Notwithstanding paragraph (1)(j), every person who lives wholly or in part on the avails of prostitution of another person who is under the age of eighteen (18) years is guilty of an indictable offence and liable to imprisonment for a term not exceeding fourteen years.

(...) (4) Every person who, in any place, obtains or attempts to obtain, for consideration, the sexual services of a person who is under the age of eighteen (18) years or who that person believes is under the age of eighteen (18) years, is guilty of an indictable offence and liable to imprisonment for a term not exceeding five years. "
I couldn't find an official Federal Government site with the Criminal Code on it (bloody typical) so Interpol and the teeny-bopper site will have to do.

....Miranda, Sasha and Sweetdianne...this is serious...this could be a nasty attempt of entrapment and the fact that this e-mail is set up to make an escort an accomplice and was sent to so many escorts makes me suspicious. The police is out there setting up traps for those sick predators and we all need to know how to respond to such a situation properly. Just imagine this e-mail is from LE. Could you get already into trouble for not reporting it? We need the opinion of a lawyer...

The age of concent was made 14 to keep young couples out of trouble and really was to get away from statutory rape charges being laid on young men sleaping with their girlfriends.
It was never ment as a means for old men to sleap with young women.
Their are plenty of young sp's and I mean late teens early twenties available. If this isn't good enough than perhaps a friendly jailmate is the answer to this guys needs.

I stand corrected.

A search on Altavista on a phrase from what I did quote turned up nothing; and if you go to The Parliament Page and search for Criminal Code, up comes: "You are not authorized to view this page" [HTTP 403 Forbidden].

How did you find it?
Google! of course!

Did a search for Criminal Code of Canada

FBI and State Police involved too please

Report him to the American authorities as well as he has probably already committed a crime in the US just by writing that email. Prostitution is illegal and there may be state or federal laws against soliciting for sex with a minor.

At least involve the FBI, preferably also his local state police, if you know which state he's from.
