Lately my computer has been really slow. I don’t know if this is related to the problem but when I turn the computer off I also get a message that it is closing down some program called WMS Idle. Then I get the message that WMS Idle is not responding and I have to press End Program Now to turn it off.

I don’t think it is a virus as I have up-to-date anti virus software.

Any ideas?

Thanks very much for the advice. Unfortunately, it didn’t work. My problem is slightly different than the one described in the link. I do get the message it reports when I try to turn off my computer. However, when I press end task, I do get to exit the program, unlike the problem described in link. I did try to download the patch in the link. However, when I try to run the patch I get a message telling me that I don’t have the program the patch is for installed on my computer..

BTW, I did try a few other things and found something that temporarily works. Under “Help and Support” I did a search for “slow” and one of the options that comes up is “Set system to optimal performance”, when I run this (it does not run in the way described but it runs), it does temporary fix the problem. My CPU usage (reported by task manager) drops from 100% to about 4% and I don’t get the error message regarding WMS idle when I shut down the computer. However, it only works until I restart the computer the next time. Thus, although it allows me to use the computer at a reasonable speed, it would be nice to find a more permanent fix rather than running this every time I start the computer.

I appreciate the advice you gave me. I you have any more, it would be appreciated.

I think you solved my problem. Recently I got a DVD drive replaced and it looks like the guy who did it installed Nero with the driver (both are on the disk be gave me when I picked up the computer and I’m pretty sure I didn’t have nero before). I removed it and things seem to work fine now. I had wondered if my problem could be related to something he did with the new drive, but I had also made a couple of other changes at the same time. Thanks very much. I can’t believe what a quick solution I got to my problem by posting on terb.

BTW, for some reason it never occurred to me that I could google WMS idle. I don’t know why it never occurred to me. It would have saved me a lot of wasted time that I spent looking in other places and trying dumb things that had nothing to do with my problem. In future, I’ll have to remember that. Thanks very much.
