Sir Ranulph Fiennes, who some consider the greatest explorer of our time is leading an expedition walking across the Antarctic continent in the winter, ~3200 km in ~150 days. It has been tried before and failed both times. Thy will experience temperatures of ~-90C and wind chills of ~-120C. I cannot explain to you what those temperatures are like, but dangerous is the best description. Having experienced actual temperatures of-40C for a number of days and -50C only a few times, -74C with wind chill, I can get some idea and it chills me just thinking of those temperatures.
As it will be dark most of the time, the chance rescue, if needed, will be slim at best.
