Social Media Doesn't Create Negativity, it Uncovers It

I think it gives people the opportunity to sit behind a computer screen and anonymously say horrible things that most would never dream of saying in person. I think whole communities spring up where people do this and eventually, individuals become changed by their exposure to that negativity. I don't know how many of you saw the group where the Oregon shooter was posting in, but imo, that is a perfect example of what I am describing.

Social media turns reality into augmented reality, the same as "reality tv" does. There's was a neat infographic about the plight of perpetual unhappiness that plagues millenials, somewhat derived from social media..

True this, it uncovers the best and worst in peeps!...

We can uncover a lot of truth about ourselves through what we post and based on how we treat others through our anonymity ironically enabled through 'social' media...this is why I love getting it on with peeps sometimes and digging deep as far as that rabbit hole goes...it can be quite liberating as long as it is done responsibly.

I have a few friends who I've had to unsubscribe to, simply because their online persona's are extremely annoying and feel inconsistent with the way they behave with me in person. The easy real-time nature of technology actually caters to people's basic irrationality: reacting to anything immediately usually means an emotional reaction, anger, fear or envy. A nuanced thoughtful reaction takes time. Technology is ultimately a mirror, it only amplifies what's already there, and there is a lot of negativity, confusion and frustrated entitlement in the world.

I think it can be very harmful for teens and even pre teens. Its very scary to see some of the bullying that goes on online.

Hence the reasons for 'manners' or polite society. Thank heavens we (most of us anyway) act in a far more guarded way in public/with people than on-line.

I suppose it has a bit to do with the wild west nature, and ultimate freedom the internet has allowed. Of course when we can hide behind a screen name (I realize I have been guilty of it too) we don't pull punches like we would 'in public'.

It's an interesting study in human nature.
