Got a notice in the mail from County of Wellington Automated Speed Enforcement. An $83.25 speeding ticket for going 62 km/h in a 50 zone. On a four lane road. Fuck right off.

Cash grab. The idea of trying to regulate speed for safety is a lofty goal but most speed traps are setup to make money. I've seen a school zone that drops the speed from 60 to 40 with plenty of warning zones but I've never seen radar enforcement. A few pure financially motivated traps that I can think of ....

  • MajorMac westbound from Weston road passes many schools, residential plazas, etc. Beyond Pine Valley road is forest on each side. There is a steep valley followed by a steep hill towards Islington. If you are going the speed limit entering this steep downward slope, you will be speeding unless you hit the brakes before the steep hill ahead of you. Parked in a laneway at the bottom shaded by trees ... a radar setup to 'enforce $afety'.
  • Dixon Road is about 6 lanes wide over the Humber bridge. No driveways but a wonderful stretch to post a 50 kph speed limit with appropriate space for radar setups.

There are others that come to mind but the suggestion safety is the prime concern the way many radar cars/cameras are set is a farce.

Wellington is a nice place...I pass by it on my way to the cottage... a lot of very impatient drivers in the area of PIcton...you drive on speed limit, they will take the opposite lane to pass...very dangerous...I'm glad they have those sensors / cameras now. Also what's up with Belleville? I see a lot of homeless there now....I mean...it's not like the rent there are GTA level..

In Niagara most speed cameras are in school zones or near high collision intersections.

Say that to a judge.
You were speeding and you got a ticket. lmao.
If it were a cop they wouldn't even stop you for going 12 over. 12 over when in reality the speed limit should be 60-70 km. The end goal is road safety giving me this ticket has ZERO to do with road safety. It was a Saturday morning at 10:45 am with little foot traffic in the area.

I bounced a $3.00 cheque for a parking ticket in New Westminster decades ago. Bank of Nova Scotia charged me $30.00 for bouncing it because I only had $2.98 in my account at the time.
I would have shut that bank account down immediately.

I'm ok with the camera if people are going excessively fast. 62 in a 50 zone is not excessively fast. Try driving 12 km/h its a crawl. This reminds me of the photo radar the Rae government brought in on the highways back in the early 90's. Simply a tax grab.

Its the principle of the matter. 12 km over doesn't warrant a speeding charge. Especially when the posted limit is too low to begin with. But yes life goes on and I'll write the $83.25 charge off as vehicle expense.

That looks like a deal to me, got one on a four lane commercial street in Winnipeg about 6 or 7 years ago. 60 in a 50 zone, $210.00

Don't be so sure.
One of my friends got pulled over for being 1kmph over, and given a "warning".
Not sure if the cop messed up on that occasion and was trying to save face.
Most speeding tickets have nothing to do with road safety but the actual speeds being over.

I am good with this and be transparent if I ran the city.

This program is a form of taxation which pays for all your programs. So if we get rid of this, do you prefer a tax increase or add to the city debt?

12 km/hour could be the tipping point of a pedestrian being hit to a fatal accident.

My solution is to have a sign which states speed and pending fine. One could slow down or say, fuck it and drive.

Also cops should focus on real crime and not issuing rickets. Very cost effective means to pad the cofers

We need more speed cams. And red light cams.
We need to have an app installed on every car and it will identify any time you go 1 kilometer over the posted limit. You will be billed automatically and if you do not pay, they will confiscate your car, Garner your wages or imprison you.

That sucks and I agree it is sillyness. Maybe Dougie will pass a law that states these types of cameras must have a real safety purpose when they are used.
