If you think they make a mess of a lawn, you should see what they can do to a container garden. Get a dog. Its considerably cheaper than digging up the entire lawn, laying down an electrical grid, and waiting patiently by the window, switch in hand and an evil, twisted smile on your face (like Dick Cheney). Next best solution is astroturf. Drives them crazy.

Some one told me it may be grubs, I'm going t check out some grub control.
Ahhh...yes. Then it may not be squirrels. Skunks go after grubs. Are you in an area with skunks? Call a landscaper. They know how to deal with grubs.

You need to know the life cycle of the insect prior to applying an insecticide. In this case, you would need to know when this Insect is in it's feeding stage.

I would consult with horticulturist asap because if the larvae of the japanese beetle is going to feed before winter, than you could be about to lose your entire lawn and then they will migrate to your neighor's lawn etc. I have seen entire streets lose their lush green lawns and it could cost you a fortune to get them replaced.

It is best to start with hand fed squirls. Those found hanging around Tim Hortins tend to be well fed and easy to catch.

Once you have your squirl properly dressed, you are ready to begin.

Mince one large onion
3 cloves minced garlic
peel and thinly slice 3 large apples
2 cups white wine
1/4 cup honey

Preheat oven to 275

combine all ingreedents in roasting pan
cook for 35 minutes per pound.

For the perfect meal use Chestnut dressing to garnish.

Serve you and your guest squirl as much as he cares to eat

Squirrels don't usually dig up your lawns. Have to agree with the others - probably a coon or a skunk. If this is the case, then you have grubs, no doubt about it. Birds will also dig in the lawn for them, but they don't make as big of a mess. Personally, in accordance with local bylaws, I've gone to a pesitcide free lawn. To combat a grub problem early in the spring, I got from Humber Nurseries a natural solution - Nemotyhphes (probably spelled wrong). What they are, are microscopic grubs that you spray onto your lawn using a regular water sprinkler. Make sure the container is clean of any pesticides. What they do is attack the grubs in the lawn - good for any type of grub. They feed on the grubs and lay their eggs, therefore multiplying and spreading out through your whole lawn, killing all the grubs. Totally harmless to anything else and works great - personally, my lawn looks great - no weeds or bare patches.
If it is squirrels, then spreading cayenne pepper in the spots will work and it will not hurt your lawn. However, this is a remedy usually used for gardens - i.e. bulbs. Egg shells work well as well.

Dog

BTW - buy a dog.

At the range!!!
It sounds like skunks. Anyway 'Blood meal' which can be purchased at your local garden centre keeps squirrels away.
