Starting a MP

Hey everyone. I'm interested in starting my own MP, and would love to get everyone's advice/stories, etc.

I know it's long hours, lots of hard work, and more of a PITA than anything remotely fun, but it's something I want to do. I feel that if I go in knowing and accepting this, I can make it a successful venture.

What do I need as far as the legalities/ylaws go? I want to run a clean place without the major risk of jail or legal battles. I'm not into pimping women or making anyone do anything they don't want to. I'm not out there to make a profit by hurting others.

If anyone has any advice, please let me know.

It makes more sense than opening a restaurant or bar - that's the common dream which is almost guaranteed to fail.
You won't need as much money to start up, but you still require a few thousand which will be tough to borrow. A basic mall or industrial unit that's been vacant for a long time, a couple of girls, a few ads and the traffic will come.
The women may be more wary of working for a guy no matter of his stated intentions, but there are some that will give it a try.
If you're prepared to be busted once in a while, you can make a few bucks.

Busted with what consequences? I'm not looking to have a record or be thrown in jail.

I guess being raided once in a while comes with the territory, but I plan to run a clean shop. I rather be open longer, and have my freedom, than make a couple more bucks and risk losing it all.

You might want to start by going to the city hall (whatever city you plan on opening in) Ask for a copy of the By-Laws, restrictions.

That alone she keep you busy for a while.

What kind of money can be made here? I admit I don't have the knowldge to run a business, but I might be interested in making an investment in a well-run legit place and maybe volunteer some time as a day manager.

If you want advice on legalities, consult a lawyer.

While you may get busted for by-laws, you need to consider more major busts, which may lead to a criminal record. A few worst-case scenarios (if you get caught) to consider though:

1) Employee gives you phony ID, and is underage
2) Employees bringing drugs/weapons on premises
3) Even though you run a clean operation, one girl decides to give FS to clients regularly on your premises without you knowing. LE are much more likely to come-down on places that offer FS than tow the line and keep to HJ

I believe that all of these may lead to crimial charges against you regardless of how well you manage your new enterprise - but again, check with a lawyer. There are a few MP owners and managers in the MP section of the board. Perhaps try asking there. The successful MP owners and managers likely have ways around these issues.

Thank you for the info angelinalassage. A friend of mine who knows some of the people in the industry had said that a holistic liscence is what I should get to open the business. If I keep my rules of no sex, etc, enforced, than I wouldn't really be doing anything outside of the laws right? I plan to run a very tight ship. No sex, drugs, booze, etc in my establishment. There's no reason why it can't make $ by being legit. If I have to be hassled once in a while by the powers that be, I can deal with that, because I will be running a legitimate place.

The Shake: Have to start somewhere right? Haven't seen any job openings looking for men to work in the parlours. If you have any suggestions regarding how to gain more experience, I'd love to hear them.

The City of Toronto is in the process of revising its Holistic licensing policies to stop rub'n'tugs from using them. It's a dead end.

My main suggestion is to find a different area to open your business. Opening a small business in any industry is difficult - more so if you lack experience in the field. Not only do you face those normal challenges, you are trying to overcome them in a quasi-legal industry that is viewed as a pariah by many people.

Have you put together a formal business plan?

How much capital do you have to invest?

How much of your income/capital will you set aside for legal bills?

You want to run a "clean" joint - how will you do so?

How will you deal with unsavoury elements including, but not restricted to, organized crime?

How much of your start-up capital will be invested in advertising and promotion?

Will you be buying a pre-existing facility, or having a retail store-front converted to your needs?

What sort of experience do you have managing people and, more specifically, managing sex-trade workers?

Does your accountant have experience working with companies that deal primarily in non-receipted cash transactions? Do you even have an accountant?

Will you be reporting the income of your workers to Rev Canada, or just the door fees? Have you even thought of questions like that?

Do I need to go on?

Then tell me why I'm so lost, instead of just making the comment.
You mean other than the fact that you think that running a small business is something that you can just walk into?

Where do you plan to hire your initial group of women from? Other spas? Want-ads?

What will your selection criteria be? Will you insist on "sampling the merchandise first"?

Will you explain to the women that their job involves masturbating strange men - including the fat, the old, the creepy, and the stinky?

How will you monitor their performance?

How will you ensure their personal safety in the room?

How will you minimize (because you can't stop it entirely) the amount of illegal activity that your workers undertake?

How many women will you have on shift at a time?

Which shifts need more women? Which ones need less?

What happens the first time someone "steals" another woman's "regular"?

I should have said this earlier, but your willingness to "Work Hard" doesn't mean shit!

If you get a holisitic licence, HJ is not allowed!! It is, by letter of the law, illegal and therefore not legitimate. If you provide HJ thinking you are legitimate, your "hassles" could become the very legal problems you wish to avoid!!!

Consult a lawyer if you are concerned about legal issues. There are a few on the boards who provide service to MP owners specifically. Find them.

When you are satisfied that the legal environment is for you, then worry about all the issues The Shake addresses. And really, really, think about it this way - you can't monitor every session and every girl. I go to MP's alot. I have been offered FS in places where it is not allowed. All it takes is for one of your staff to offer FS to the wrong person, and you're running a bawdy house and all the shit that comes with it.

Look up Nona's Spa in the MP section. I don't know whether what happened is true or not, but it certainly illustrates the point I'm talking about.

Also, you keep harping on "legitimate". A legitimate business is registered with the Ontario Government and Revenue Canada as well. Are you going to do this? How do you plan on paying taxes and keeping "legitimate records". Tax evasion and fraud is serious offense as well.

Please point out the specific law at any level that differentiates between FS and HJs, saying FS is illegal but HJs are okay in a MP with the 'right' type of licence.

May not have stated myself clealy. The law does not distinguish, from what I understand. All are illegal. I think the guy thinks that if he gets a holistic licence he will be running a legitimate business. Not true. If he offers HJ anywhere, it is illegal from what I understand.

Haywood, I know that you post in the MP forum, and it is commonly said there that the MP's that attract attention are the ones that tend to offer FS. Though HJ is illegal, from what I hear on the MP side, LE are primarily concerned with FS MP's.

I'll clarify - all are illegal, all are not a legitimate business activity, and in my opinion, if any staff offers FS, you are more likely to be hassled by LE and face serious charges, and since you cannot monitor every session with every MPA, it is a risk that you run.
