Next to the money pit.
Here's one thing I been wondering for a while. So all you baseball fans, kindly chime in with your thoughts.

I believe Cecil Fielder was the first in a decade or two back in the early 1990's to club 50 plus home-runs in a single season. Question: Was he on steriod?

We mostly associate baseball players taking the butt injection having bulklier looks. For instance, Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa, Barry Bonds, and now Roger Clemens.

His 50 HR season was just an outlier from his regular output of 30-40.

Remember even as a Jay he was popping one HR every 20 AB's, as a bench player... and he was far from his prime.

Then again it's not like Cecil would have any moral qualms about cheating. He has turned out to be qyute the sad excuse for a human since his playing days.

So I call it a toss uo.

I'd vote...

...no. Cecil was just a big fucking dude who liked food...and I'd say his son's success proves he had the right DNA for the job...

The only way Big Cecil was on steroids,is if the trainer snuck them into his glazed donuts

Baseball players like Frank Thomas , Cecil Fielder , and even modern day Ryan Howard were born with Huge body frames .... ie Ryan Howard is the smallest of brothers that are even bigger then him ... So I don't think getting bigger would only benefit these guys if they were changing sports and going to football ... Oh yea even ex Jay Winfied ... He was drafted in 3 sports ... Football, baseball, and basketball ..
How about Mo Vaughn. He fits the build of a Thomas, Fielder, Howard and he was named in the Mitchell Report. The allegations on him were connected to an ankle injury after he left Boston in 1998. The Report mentions 2001, well after his MVP saeson with the Sox in 1995, but how do we know? Seems like 1998 or somewhere around there was when this 'roid era' all began.

Then there were rumblings about David Ortiz as well. He wasn't named in the Report, but see now ...... one will always be suspicious. It is going to be difficult to look at any ballplayer now and not think ..... hmmmmm wtf?

Cecil was never much of a Fielder, and the Jays already had Willie Upshaw at first and Fred McGriff as the left handed DH. Cecil had the opportunity to display his power in the Japanese League for a year before returning to the AL with Sparky Anderson's Tigers in 1990. He had a monster spring training that year, and won the full time DH job in Detroit. All he needed was a chance to play regularly, but not have to field the ball.

He hit a lot of home runs that first year with the Tigers because pitchers were challenging him. He had had limited success in the Majors previously, and Home Run totals from Japanese League games are not taken as seriously here. Once he proved that he could hit Major League pitching hard and far and often, he saw fewer fat pitches. It's like a football safety who gets 11 interceptions one year, and one the next, but makes the Pro Bowl both times. You can't intercept the ball if it isn't thrown near you. I didn't check this in advance, but I would think Fielder's strikeout and walk totals would increase after his 50 Homer season. He'd try to hit more pitchers' pitches out, and he'd lay off on more balls clearly out of the strike zone.

I find players with a sudden surge of power and performance to be highly suspect.

Greg Vaughn and Adrian Beltre to name a couple...

Thes players have one decent year(contract year) and then just fade away.

The way I remember it was he went to Japan and learned to hit off speed pitches before he came back to US to play.

That's highly likely. It's also unlikely that he would have started to use steroids while in Japan. It's very difficult to bring drugs into Japan. Just ask Sir Paul McCartney.
