There is an old Irish proverb that goes something like this:

"There are bold pilots and there are old pilots, but there are no old bold pilots."

Steve Fossett lived his life boldly. He leaves a rich legacy of achievements that will likely never be matched or surpassed. Rest in peace, Steve, your rest is well deserved.

I think he either did this as a stunt to gain publicity,or he committed suicide.

It is not required to file a flight plan in the U.S. even if you are going on a long flight. Remeber JFK Jr? Complacency is the general aviator's worst enemy. After you get several hundred or thousand hours one tends to take shortcuts. BAD MISTAKE. Remember John Denver? Who knows what happened but not filing a flight plan reeks of carelessness (technically, filing one will automatically trigger search and rescue if you are late by 1hr; actually, search and rescue start checking after 1/2hr). Not sure if the authorities have found him yet (nothing in the papers or aviation news). Maybe he is ok.

It is not important how or why he died. What is important is that he lived life boldly and dared to attempt what many of us fear to try. When we all reach the ripe old age of 99, many of us will look back and regret what we did not dare attempt.

Now you planted a seed of doubt in my mind. Is it possible that he is trying to disappear from a mistress, creditor, etc.?

Flight plans are not required when remaining within 25 nautical miles of the take off location. Also, in Canada at least, a flight itinerary can be filed with any "responsible person" who is to contact NavCanada if the pilot is overdue.

The Americans recently privatized their flight services organization and services levels are a large area of concern. Many general aviation pilots have indicated in the flying forums that it has been difficult to impossible to file flight plans in a timely manner, as the new provider is minimizing staff, and seems to be primarily focussed on airlines and cargo needs.

There was a report that searchers are checking out canyons.
I do hope they recover his body as he deserves a proper funeral and also to give his family closure.
