Of course it's still a business arrangement, one of mutual benefit for grown-ups who are very clear about what they want. However, because the relationship involves more time, intimacy and exclusivity, compatibility is key. And so is finding fiscal and temporal terms that are agreeable to both parties. There should also be an "out" worked into the arrangement, for either side. If you find someone you get along with well, and everyone has their head screwed on straight, a relationship of this variety can be very satisfying.
