Apart from really high end like Rosens or low to middle chain like Moores where do you buy suits?
Anyone any experience with Toms Place in Kensington? Or Korys on the Danforth?

I got my first set of suits from Toms Place when I moved to a new company years ago and it was one of the best investments in myself I ever made. I got fairly classic cut suits so they don't age as quickly as something über hip and current. 3 were Sean John, 2 were Ralph Lauren, and one was a fairly anonymous simple black suit for funerals and the like.

Definitely worth checking out.

Remember that you really also need to put some money into good shirts and ties that work with the suits you buy. The right suit says a lot about a man, but a cheap shirt, tie, or shoes says "I fucked this up.

Good input so far...thanks. I have been thinking about an off the rack decent suit/brand eg Ralph Lauren and looking at having one made. Anyone had any experience with the Indian and/or Chinese tailors that come thru Toronto occassionally offering deals on handmade suits? Does Toms carry good brands?
I agree about the shirts/ties and most importantly shoes. Many times you meet guys in business in a good looking suit and then their shoes are a crap...ruins the whole investment they have made in the suit!

If you know your suits, you know the finest worsteds come from Huddersfield in England.

H has been in the wool trade from the start of the industrial revolution. Most of the mills closed in the 80s due to Asian competition - the survivors survived by creating a niche for the very finest cloths.

You can purchase a suit length from the mill, online. You can get very good quality for under GBP100 per metre. You need e.g seven metres for a suit, to be on the safe side -- that covers 3-piece, matching the pattern, you being large, etc. (Don't skimp on the quantity - you can't go back for a bit more.)

They sell to the trade, of course, but I've not had trouble getting just one or two suit lengths. Best suit material I ever had was from the end of an overrun of an order from a sheik, which I got for next to nothing.

Can't help with getting it made up. It helps to have a (retired) tailoress in the family.

I would go with Korry's; Tom's is a bit more hit and miss.

As for those 'travelling' tailors, quality and consistency are highly variable. You're better off going with a brick-and-mortar bespoke tailor whose clothes are actually made locally.

As a coincidence, I dropped by Tom's Place today. Good selection of nice suits and jackets. Lots of staff available to help. They have a sale on at present. When I went to pay for my sport coat, Tom was hanging out by the register and knocked some additional $$ off the total. I was happy with my experience and would return. They will also provide a parking receipt for a free hour at the Green P if you ask.

Custom is good advice if you can afford it. High quality material will look and fit like a million bucks. It will last a long time if cared for. Don't buy trendy suits. They look good for a season or two then you look dated. Classic cuts are best. Classic colors are best. Grey, dark blue pin stripe and black. I won't tell you what my last suits ensemble cost me. Worth every penny.
