La la land
I am looking for some info.
A long time ago, a decade or so, Sun had it's own desktop computer that cost 10k+. But they had great software. I remember one that was 3D CAD or Animation.

Does anyone here know a forum for SUN computer of old and new?

I know their OS is Solaris, would it be in there?
I just found it's called OpenSolaris

Thanks for the help.

The Sun operating system will also run on intel/AMD based machines... If you purchase Sun hardware it comes with a right to use (RTU) the OS. You just need to ensure the media you are using is appropriate for the hw. As far as software goes... you pretty much just get the base OS. You can check out the sun freeware site in terms of what software is out there for your use...(mostly GNU based).

I'd purchase something on ebay if I were you, although you might want to do a little digging in terms of what you want to make sure you are getting a big enough box...

The OpenSolaris is handy, but is probably most useful to you if you want to port some of the Sun programs back to older versions of the OS that lack the newer tools.

Personally I think you're probably better off going with some Linux variant unless there is something specific you are looking for or just have an interest in learning Solaris.

The old Sun desktop you were thinking about is the Sun IPC/IPX which were the equivalent of a SPARCstation 1+/2 (i.e. 486-50 or P-75):

The OS for these boxes was Sun OS 4.1.1 which pre-dated Solaris. You can run Redhat for SPARC on these boxes.

If you want to learn about Solaris, you can download the full version Solaris10 for a regular PC (free) directly from Sun. They were losing too much business to Linux, so they made it open source and available for free. Sun makes back that money by selling support OS contracts, just like Redhat. Solaris10 is source code compatible between SPARC and Intel. It should eventually also let you run Linux programs natively, so anything that works on Linux will also run on Solaris10.

I think this would be a lot easier to run Solaris10/PC vs. old Sun OS/IPC/IPX. You essentially would need to get all the Sun maintenance utilities for the IPC/IPX and also find someone to show you how to use them.

Svg

Thanks fellows for the links and so on. THis helped alot. I was mostly looking for , after some research, a software that SUN had. I realize now that is was an SVG program they had, like coreldraw and illustrator I think.

The reason being is that yesterday's software is been sought out today by the linux community. Everyone is looking for SVG / 3DSVG which saves alot fo bytes.

Believe it or not yesterdays software has the solution for today's demand.
SUN doesn't realize they have another JAVA hiding in their vault.

oh well.
