Or the defeat will come with an excuse.

Conspiracy, lol! It's not like Goober snuck into the equipment room, made little cuts in Sundin's stick so that it would break at the most inopportune moment and then telepathically suggested to Mats at that moment that he should look into the stands and then chuck the stick recklessly at the crowd...did he?

Come on people, he's only a TERB mod.

No conspiracy here! The fact of the matter is Sundin did something stupid and potential very dangerous to the fans in the stands. He should have gotten 2 games atleast. I find it funny that the Ref's didn't see this infraction and assess a penalty as it should have been done. They also missed the call on Havlat the other night when he kicked a player with his skate.

There seems to be a number of bad calls and none calls by the ref's now-a-days. Do you think the ref's in the nhl are getting worse than they use to be?

scubadoo - it's easy to critize the refs. I have a quick question or two.
Can you even skate?
Do you see everything the first time or only on the replay the third time?
The good thing about this great sport is human error not incompitence is part of it!!!

Goldenboy - I have to agree. No penalty was called, it was an accident. But even though it was dumb, Mats only made a mistake. Nobody was hurt, it was a rare occurance.

If Ottawa can play though lost bodies on the bench, so can Toronto. Hope tomorrow's game is good.

Kathleen,

I know it was a mistake, but it really doesn't matter if no one was hurt, he threw his stick into the stands. If he hit someone, the fallout from the lawsuit would have been huge. I think that he is lucky just to get a one game suspension.
A football (that's soccer to the rest of you) player in England just got a two game suspension for throwing a plastic water bottle into the stands. I think that a hockey stick, has way more potential for damage than a water bottle.
Besides, just for being a Leaf, he should have received a lifetime suspension!

BTW, who are my two favourite NHL teams? The Habs and whoever is playing the Leafs.

Fair questions.

Yes I can skate. I played 1 season of Junior A CJHL and 2 seasons of Junior B hockey. I also have a cousin who has won a stanley cup. Fair enough?

Being a season ticket holder I'm not looking at replay's, I'm seeing things first hand. The reason they added an additional ref for a total of two was so that one ref was looking at the play around the puck and the other ref was covering play away from the puck. Seems to be an over abundance of human error IMHO.

Clearly, the play when Nolan was hurt was with the puck present, the ref should have seen that. Same with Havlat, he kicked the guy in the nuts right in front of the net with the puck present. Any ref worth his weight should have seen them! Mayeb it is time they empower the linesmen to be able to call penalties when it involves things of this nature and a player is hurt.

The refs deserve a great deal of criticism on this play in particular as well in Nolan's case. Had they applied the rule as they should, we probably wouldn't be looking at a suspension. A 10 minute misconduct could have had a material impact on the outcome of the game for the predators, particularly when you look at the fact that Sundin assisted on both the tieing and winning goals.

Eventhough it's a discretionary call, a linesman did see the incident and the refs should have acted. I wouldn't be surprised if there is some stiff punishment for the refs as a result. They have made (missed) some pretty bonehead calls of late and need to show they are on top of things. It use to be that you could rely on the NHL refs for the most part, but lately they've been as useless as the CFL and NFL refs.

You bring up a good point about punishment and/or some type of review of the officials.

Im a baseball umpire and you judgement or lack there of can determine what level you are allowed to work at. I have worked up the ranks and now am able to umpire university baseball and it is great. However, if you fuck up and it is justified your gonna get an earful from the umpire supervisor. Even demoted!

Some immediate solutions should be that no inexperienced ref get partnered together. You have one experienced ref partnered with an less experience ref so they can learn. I have seen a number of games this year with 2 ref's who I have never seen before and they call a shitty game. Also, more post game reviews by the NHL staff to show the officials where they fucked up.

Let's face it, the missed call when Nolan got hurt and the missed call with Havlat kicked the guy in the nuts with his skate with the puck present should not have been missed.

I can't get the image of that Buffalo Sabres goalie who had his throat cut right in front of the net by a players skate.

Good God....
Good ole Roland Melanson or Rollie the Goalie.I remember that incident well.

It should be noted that after this tragic incident he went on to be a spokesmen for the Pez Candy Dispenser Company!
