Hey Terbies

Let me qualify this question by first saying this is not about bashing Mats, we all know he is one of the best in the league.

My question is if you were JFJ would consider a trade involving Mats if you could get a new young stud like Eric Staal for example and hi/ mid level D man say a guy that make 3.5 m or so. You may need to throw in a guy like Berg or Coliacovo to complete the deal.
To me the Big E has stepped up into the leadership role both on the ice and in the media. The obvious gamble is his head.
I'm really thinking about our D we could use one more solid one out there and having the added bonus of future franchise type guy would be awsome.

It's just a question

Dont get to harsh with the Flex bashing LOL

Id love to see Sundin retire a Leaf but you always have to look at a trade that makes sense for the team (that was my JFJ impression). Im not sure Sundins worth to other teams is all that high though. A package deal would have to be the way to go. I think we need a good young goalie and a dman.

This is obvious. He is definitely on the block but like quoted earlier unless he comes back with a bang his salary makes him hard to move. He is/was a good player but im not sure if there would be any good scenarios out there leaf fans would like. As for Eric Staal theres no way any good young players would be traded for Mats. No market for the old highly paid players anymore.

Time is healer

Sundin needs to prove that his eye has healed and he can produce in the new NHL.

Any team that would trade for Sundin (and his contract) would need to have cap room to accept his salary. This means that he would need to go to a team which is well below the cap. 'Cap-enomics' will rule player movement who have Sundin-like salaries.

As for who we will get in return .... don't know ....

But it certainly wouldn't be Staal. Carolina needs to sell tickets, they can't let him go.

Just curious to know if there has ever been a Stanley cup winning team with a European player as captain?

I am a fan of Sundin, and I would love to see him retire as a Leaf....
However, the reality is that may not happen.

The Leafs are doing OK without him right now. His salary is a big consideration. The Leafs really need another solid defenceman and an heir to Belfour.

If the Leafs can continue to win some games without Sundin, then the Leafs can definitely use Sundin as trade bait to land a solid defender. Hopefully that would free up some space in the salary cap.

Someone mentioned whether Sundin can prove that he can play in the new NHL.... as long as his eye injury heals, Sundin will flourish in this new NHL.

As I said, I would love to see Sundin stay in TO, but his salary is way too large in the new economic enviornment. It's obvious that the Leafs need to spend some money on defence if they are ever going to get to Lord Stanley's Cup.....

It is a sacred obligation of Leaf fans to diss the Captain even if season in, season out, he is the most consistent of all the players. I remember watching the sad sorry group during the eighties and listening nightly to the rain of abuse that poured down on rick vaive even though he was a fifty goal man on a pretty terrible team.

This is was in no way meant as a Sundin bashing post.
I think he's great it's just a question of the new economics of the game and the reality that our D is in a bit of trouble if we really want to get anywhere come palyoff time. Belak and Berg and to some degree even the new guy from St Louis (Khavnov not sure of the spelling) are a little week. You must also realize that if Lindros keeps up the way he's going 1.5 won't be in the cards for next year. I believe he singend a 1 year deal. Mats has talent, the salary will be hard for any team to take agreed but, his market value must be still worth quite a bit. He still averages some where in the 80 point range that's got to be of value somewhere..

Again just a fun talk.. We all know it wont happen...
Mats rocks

Never say never
But the is no way you can get equal value for
Matts with the cap
you would have to recieve 2 maybe 3 players of lesser
quality to make up the six million.
I am a BIG "E" fan but lets not lose sight that it is still
a 60/40 at best he can last 82 games / playoffs
I say run with what you have and hope that
by the mid season mark Wozniewski and Carlo C
can jump up and be #5-6 on the "D"
I BELIEVE THAT THE ONLY WAY THE LEAFS CAN WIN A CUP
IS TO KEEP MATTS AND TRY TO IMPROVE YOU FORWARDS
TO THE POINT WERE HE IS YOUR #2 CENTRE/FORWARD
PLAYING THE LEVEL HE HAS IN THE PAST FEW YEARS
NO EASY TASK I KNOW BUT
IF LINDROS STAYS INJURY FREE
90-95 POINTS IS REACHABLE
ALLISON , O'NEAL AND TUCKER CAN KEEP IT UP.
WITH STEEN AND STAJAN'S YOUTH
THATS 6 FORWARDS THAT CAN MATCH ALMOST ANY TEAM
{OK SEN'S FANS I KNOW YOU ARE LOADED THERE ]
This started as a future of SUNDIN thread.
I say let him stay a Leaf and retire as the top point man in team history
he is 161 points away.
2-3 years should to it.

I like and have always supported Sundin. Sundin has been the key part of what has made this team watchable for the past decade. Here is my opinion of this hypothetical scenario as expressed by another.

i hate to say this but the leafs have a team that can win the cup this year...(except that's not what I hate)

o.k.; now the part i hate: the leafs had a team that could possibly win the cup for as long as I could remember. except for between 88-89,90-92, 96-98...

Leafs, Sundin reach 1-year deal

In what is being widely interpreted as a move by Mats Sundin to help the Maple Leafs become more competitive more quickly, the Toronto captain today signed a one-year contract extension with the club for $5.5 million (all figures U.S.).
