A 20-year-old man wanted in connection with a shooting inside a busy Toronto shopping centre last week has been arrested, Toronto police confirm.

Gunfire erupted near a Starbucks in the southeast side of Yorkdale Mall, located near Allen Road and Highway 401, shortly before 3 p.m. last Thursday.

Police say two groups of males were involved in an altercation and two shots were later fired.

Panicked members of the public ran and ducked for cover when the shots rang out and the incident prompted police to put the mall on lockdown for the rest of the day.

Some shoppers were trapped inside stores while they waited for the all-clear from officers.

Video surveillance footage from the mall was subsequently released to the public and the suspect was identified as Zion Sankar-Beharry, of Toronto

Police confirmed Tuesday that Sankar-Beharry is now in custody.

The accused, investigators say, was located outside of Trenton on Monday and he was arrested without incident.

He faces close to a dozen charges, including two counts of attempted murder, two counts of pointing a firearm, possessing a loaded regulated firearm, and carrying a concealed weapon.

Sankar-Beharry made a brief court appearance on Tuesday but his case was adjourned until Sept. 7 at 10 a.m.

So now we get to take care of this kid for basically the rest of his life. He has little to no chance at getting a job and will likely be in and out of jail.

He'll be back out in time. That's the sad part. Laws to prevent this from happening again are not stiff enough.

Stiffer laws aren't effective because we're looking at the problems way too late. We have to ask more difficult questions like if they are growing up in social housing and why there's a gang culture attached to them.

IMO The Toronto Police abused that power and the situation got much worse when Sammy Yatim got shot. Unfortunately, I don't think carding will be making a return any time soon.

I wont claim to have answers but the whole "Hand guns are banned in Chicago" arguement i silly because you can get guns in the US somewhere else and bring them to Chicago. In order for sonething to work it would need to have a bigger stretch.

That's exactly the point.

Gangbangers can get guns in Toronto on the black market, and most of them are smuggled from the US. So banning handguns from licensees is pointless. To think that a gangbaner can just walk into a gun store and walk out with a handgun is nonsense.

And, contrary to the propaganda from the TPS, 50% of crime guns are not sourced in Canada. That is merely an estimate and an exptrapolation. 30% of crime guns were identified, and of those, half were sourced in Canada. The rest of them, 70%, have not been positively identified. The TPS then just assumed that, of the remaining 70%, half 'must' have come from Canada, since half of the 30% were.

And about the definition of crime guns. They are not necessarily real handguns. They can be pellet guns, nail guns, stun guns, replica guns, as long as they were recovered at the scene of a crime. They don't have to have had anything to do with the crime itself, but found there, even legally owned and stored. The real figure of Canadian sourced guns is 10%.

Tory is being lied to, and he should know better than to believe everything he hears.

Attempted murder means that you'll be paying for his room and board for 10-15 years. Part of the cost of living in a society. Don't like it, move to Baffin Bay and live with the polar bears.

Paying for his room and board wouldn't be so bad if he had any chance to contribute to society after his time.

Agreed. Banning guns might make some people feel better, but it accomplishes nothing. If someone wants a gun (or anything else) badly enough, they'll find a way to get it banned or not.

Considering there is an entire thread with pages of responses why did you start a separate thread now?
