The Canadian Government is matching any dontation dollar for dollar you donate to the rescue effort in Leyte through the following charities:

Unicef Canada – To send emergency supplies to Filipino children affected by the disaster.
Canadian Red Cross- To help with emergency supplies.
Save the Children -To help with disaster relief efforts for children and families affected. 10 per cent of donations will be put aside for the next emergency.
Global Medic Canada – To help mobilize the Global Medic team with supplying Aquatabs for clean water for victims.
World Vision Canada – To provide life saving essentials and emergency supplies to victims.

Of those my preference would be the CRC: http://www.redcross.ca/donate/donate-online/donate-to-the-typhoon-haiyan-fund just because I don't know enough about how the others allocate funds.

I would prefer to donate to MSF, but they're not on the list.

p.s. - if you know any super pretty filipinas, there's good odds that they are Leyte girls, and that right now they are terrified and feeling helpless about the fate of their loved ones. In my experience Filipinas really put out for others, and have helped many of us enjoy a good time. Maybe right now is the time to give a little back.

The list is I believe larger: "for every dollar donated by individual Canadians to registered Canadian charities responding to the crisis in the country, the government will set aside an additional dollar for the Philippines crisis matching fund." This should mean that religious relief funds such as the Primate's Fund and the Mennonite Central Fund should also qualify. These funds have among the greatest "bangs for your buck" in the charitable community.

Thank you so much!! I can't stop thinking about what they're going through and it really saddens me. I am donating today and hopefully again next week. I love you phillipines!

We have almost 1 milliion Filipino's in Canada so many are affected by this tragedy. I travel the world for my job and they are without a doubt
the most wonderful caring people in this whole world. Please help them anyway you can, I certainly am.

Just a horrible devastating tragedy, maybe 10,000 dead in one city!

The United States Marines have returned to the Philippines to aid in the re-construction effort. God bless the USA.

Shoot, another storm brewing in the Pacific. Apparently, the U.S. lost more ships in the Pacific Theatre to storms than enemy action in WW II.

Update: MSF sent out a bulletin stating that contributions made to MSF's Phillipines relief fund would get the matching contribution from the Canadian government as well. MSF is usually my favorite charity, because they are the ones who tend to go furthest into the hardest hit areas, and they spend hardly anything on administration and fundraising--your contribution will go to getting medical help to the people who need it.

Red Cross, where I've donated so far, is my second choice. If things look to get worse, I will make a subsequent donation to MSF.

MSF is provisioning helicopters in the Philippines to try and put medical teams into areas that can't currently be reached, they've also set up field hospitals around Tacloban. They are anticipating a lot of serious trauma cases based on the number of buildings that have collapsed, and as the rescue effort is likely to involve digging out a lot of people who are trapped under collapsed buildings. The local hospitals in Tacloban have all been destroyed.
