I just received a new CC with the tap & pay technology and I have to say it's an ideal target for thieves. The amount of damage I could do in a couple hours with one of these cards runs in the thousands of dollars. So long as you keep it under $50.00 per purchase, most (all?) merchants don't require a signature or pin.

I have had this type of card for more tan 2 years. I think I have only seen the clerk tap my card twice in all that time. They always insert the card into the slot and I enter a PIN. I still use cash for minor purchases.

Yeah, it just so happens that both my cards expired at the same time, and that was a year or two before this tech. But the first time I went to use my new card it was tap and go.

I think the most they could get is $50, I seem to remember reading in the details for my card that once you reach $50 in tap and pay purchases it will not let any more tap and pay go through until you do a chip and pin transaction.

When I saw the subject line, I thought this was just another thread about hobbying... :)

Careful! Ceiling cat already thinks you're probably commiting credit card fraud: Anyone who uses tap-and-pay must be very suspicious. Should probably throw you in jail just to be safe.

Is Tap And Pay technology possible with debit cards, or only with credit cards?

Ahhh, that would curtail things quite a bit. I was thinking it's a maximum of $50 per purchase.

I have seen tap cards on US debit cards. I am not sure if they are in Canada yet.

That protects the CC company more than it protects you. You'd get your money back from Visa even if the thieves made hundreds of dollars in purchases. But, even if they make off with only $50, YOU have to cancel your card, get a new one and a new number, set up all your automatic deductions all over, all that crap. Pain in the ass. I got burned for $400 when someone snatched my Esso Paypass off my keychain. Visa called me on my cell phone and we confirmed which purchases weren't mine, and all those charges were removed from my account. They were very professional and cooperative, the Visa people. But I had to get a new card. Pain in the ass.

I recieved the new card with the wave as you go or simply tap and pay features. I phone up the visa( bank) and told them i dont want that feature on the card. They reissue me a new card without the tap and pay feature then I cut up the other card that had the tap & pay technollogy! Problem solved!
