What kind of precedent does this set?

http://www.cbc.ca/canada/ottawa/story/2007/01/12/iranian-teacher.html

Let me see if I have this right:

  • She is teaching using a banned book in a country known for it's extremism and leaves the country without her credentials? If I was in her position, I would make damn sure the diplomas were packed before the pictures of little Amir
"She could not provide the original documents because they are being held by the Iranian Education Ministry, and if she were to request them, the ministry might seek out and harm her family members still living in Iran"
  • Why are her family members still living in Iran any safer now, before a request for the documents? You mean the Iranian Education Ministry doesn't know she's left the country? They've lost track of the teacher who allowed her class to debate The Satanic Verses?

    What a crock of shite

The way I see it, she should have 4 choices:

  • [1]Procure the documents that prove her qualifications
  • [2]Enroll in the Ontario Teacher's College and get her credentials. Hell, I'm sure our government will even pay for it.
  • [3]Find another line of work
  • [4]Go back to Iran and sue that government for violation of rights

If demanding proof of professional qualifications is a violation of rights, our society is surely doomed.

A very bad precedent.

What about all those fake Ph.D.s who fled to Canada in the past? They did not have to prove their credentials, either. The onus was on the accreditaion boards here in Canada to verify. That was a real embarassment. Unfortunately, it painted many refugees with the same undeserved brush, because of a few bad apples.

What is this country coming to? Every professon ha sto maintain its standards. When the courts get involved, it is the end of the credibility of that profession. Don't misunderstand me. I have a heart for the unfortunate cases where there has been great hardship. However, when an accreditation body such as the College of Teachers gets ordered by a court and is told how to uphold and maintain its standards, that is the end of the credibility of that College.

I have no sympathy for Fatima Siadit.

Make no mistake about it, this is only the beginning.

What a crock of shite
Knowledge (IF they have it) of her departure from the country does not equate with the knowledge that she is claiming internationally that she must flee Iran due to her persecution there. This revelation may well endanger her relatives.

Do you really believe she has the choice to:
[4]Go back to Iran and sue that government for violation of rights
You're full of "shite".

Please. How do you know what she deserves? Siadit is either a sleazeball or a moron. Take your pick. Either way she got more than she deserves. She's living in a country that caters to this crap.

It's the beginning of the end if proof of qualifications is a violation of human rights.

She's in a no-win situation. As far as I get it, they won't accept her university qualifications so she can't even take teacher's college. I think all foreign teachers need to take courses before teaching here.

Why not? She can do it here can't she?

If this is so difficult for her to do, maybe she should be thankful she was permitted to live in a country that allows her more freedoms. Maybe she should be so thankful as to enroll in the teachers college and get the qualifications.

If things are so bad in Iran, this would seem to me to be a small price to pay.

University programs need transcripts sent directly from the issuing institutions. Have a feeling that the alumni department at Terhan U isn't quick to sent that out to Canada. Their football team kicks ass though.

As I understand it, she has no documentation at all. In the article she said she tried to get her friends to send them to her so this would tell me she wasn't required to get transcripts directly from the institution.

By the way, Terhan U's hockey team sucks.

Came here to milk the system. She deserves something all right but it is not what she expects.

I think I'll get a job as head of the Oncology dept at Princess Margaret. I'll just tell them I'm from one of those Wackystan type countries and I lost my papers. Actually I won't tell them, my interpreter will since its best if I don't speak English. Lib bleeding hearts like that.

I was making a point. There is nothing funny about this issue.

I have a problem with people who come to this country and abuse our system. Because of this idiotic ruling, my country was weakened. I prefer to live in a society where its professionals are required to prove their qualifications and asking for them is not a violation of human rights.

Besides, her story doesn't add up. She is simply pushing all the right buttons to get the bleeding hearts to back her. We've seen it already in this thread. How do we really know why she left Iran? Without knowing this or if she even has the qualifications, she can teach our children?

Anyone who believes this ruling is fair and constructive, has their head up their ass.

I am opening up my new law office this morning Lancs.

If you need any legal advise, look me up. I'm cheap too, $100 an hour and I wont charge you for paper clips.

Just don't ask where my diploma is or I'll sue your ass for violation of my rights.

So long as your office has that girl with the paperweights in it you can sue me all you like, then i'll claim racial harrassment and invoke my Wackystan diplomatic immunity. Next we will behead chickens on the steps of the legislature claiming its a sacred religous ritual from "our home country" and sue you for trying to stifle our ethnic expression of our religous rights.

You racist, facist, heightest, weightest, languageist, hockeyist Canadians are all the same.:D

another choice?

[5] Become a stripper?

Hey I forgot to ask the credentials of some girls... someone will have to pay for that!

imho and experience, being judged by the diploma stuck on your forehead is the most unfair system ever. As far as skills are judged, it is more than fair to ask a "hands on" proof of the skills and competences. Other than that is just bad faith and fucked up attitude...
Coming from France I know how ridiculous it can turn: people just out of a famous business school just entitled manager of a bank but they can't spell an email right!

Now I understand the attitude of the court, and somehow they are right to say that the college can't ask the diploma as a judge of her skills BUT it doesn't make her position legal... meaning if the college is shut up then they can still ask for her to leave as she did not comply with the administrative work (aka provide an official proof or attend a course in a Canadian program...).
Slap me in the face if I'm wrong...
