Glad to see the Teamsters still have some stones!
Teamsters realize this is just a corporate ploy to get around the Teansters and the Longhoremen unions......Longshoremen who BTW, have even bigger stones than the Teamsters!.....;)

If you think for one second that this congress and this judiciary have any concerns that American drivers will be out of work and unable to compete with these low cost service providers, think again.

It doesn't matter to the large corporations how many American drivers will lose their jobs, or how many accidents will happen because of unsafe rigs and drivers unable to read English: this is all about moving goods more cheaply from point A to point B, and whatever "collateral damage" happens is just the cost of doing business.

The Teamsters Union is asking a federal appeals court in San Francisco to block the Bush administration's plan to allow Mexican trucks to carry cargo anywhere in the United States. Federal officials say the lawsuit is without merit.

The Union's Leslie Miller says there are valid questions about the reliability of Mexican trucker's driving records.

Miller: Just because we have a free trade agreement doesn't mean people can come to out country and do business in a way that doesn't meet our standard.

The union said it has been told by officials in the Transportation Department's Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration that the first Mexican trucks will be coming across the border on Saturday. Teamsters are looking for an emergency injunction.

the Teamsters should be doing this, and as a former Teamster, I am proud of them, but lets not forget that NAFTA came about under Bill Clinton. They were silent when all of this was drawn up I guess because they liked ole Bill?

The whole deal stinks, but hey, that is the dark side of capitalism....

Thias isn't the first time. I remeber years bac, in the 90's I believe there was a push to allow Mexican trucks and driver into the US. Under NAFTA it seemed to be ok. The idea was defeated based on safty concerns.

If clinton has a lasting legacy it is NAFTA and its erosion of American Manufacturing

Only those imbiding in too much Kool-Aid swallow that BS!
Bubba is still wildly loved and revered by tens of millions in the USA and world. Something Dubya will never ever experience.
This is why Hillary can't lose in '08. The people want Bill back in the White House and figure electing Hill is the way to get Bill back in!......;)

So you would rather the Mexicans take over?????......
Bot, the Teamsters aren't that bad, you had better steer clear of the Lonshoremen though.
Team 'w', at the behest of Corporatists, want the Mexicans to replace both of them.

Why should goods being imported from Mexico have to change trucks and drivers to be delivered?

From his posts in general, I think OTB has made it clear he is mostly concerned about his bottom line.

I have a hard time thinking of a more corrupt organization than the teamsters..... perhaps the Catholic church, but that's another discussion.

If you're concerned about foreign terrorists that might be one reason.

Are they going to have to get visas to travel here?

Are they qualified to travel our roads on a Mexico drivers license?

Are we going to search each truck for drugs and other contraband?

Are the goods safe and free of critters - invasive species are
messing up the Great Lakes. Imagine the possible pollution
problems across the heartland.

Etc., etc.
There are already 3,500 Mexican trucks that enter into CA every year.....

I made the point that they are already here, regardless of visas, licenses, searches and quality of goods….. to the tune of 3,500 in California alone.

Dubya's 'Packed Courts' deliver for the Corporatists as expected

Mexico trucks to roll on U.S. highways

By John Crawley
Sat Sep 1, 11:44 AM ET

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Bush administration can proceed with a plan to open the U.S. border to long haul Mexican trucks as early as next week after an appeals court rejected a bid by labor, consumer and environmental interests to block the initiative.

The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco late on Friday denied an emergency petition sought by the Teamsters union, the Sierra Club and consumer group Public Citizen to halt the start of a one-year pilot program that was approved by Congress after years of legal and political wrangling.

The Transportation Department welcomed the decision and said in a statement that allowing more direct shipments from Mexico will benefit U.S. consumers.

The 1994 North American Free Trade Agreement approved broader access for ground shipments from both countries but the Clinton administration never complied with the trucking provision. A special tribunal ordered the Bush administration to do so in 2001.

"This is the wrong decision for working men and women," Jim Hoffa, president of the Teamsters, said in a statement after the court ruling. "We believe this program clearly breaks the law." The Teamsters represents truckers that would be affected by the change.

The emergency stay was sought on grounds the administration's pilot program had not satisfied the U.S. Congress' requirements on safety and other issues. But the appeals court ruled otherwise.....
