Tech ? - Missing Audio Device

So, I did a re-install of XP. Lo and behold, I no longer have sound.

Under 'sounds and devices' in control panel, it says 'no audio device'.

However, under hardware, it still shows::

audio codecs
legacy audio drivers

in addition to the other drivers. All are shown as :
Device Status - working properly

I'm at a loss. As they're shown to be working properly, I don't see the point of downloading the drivers again.

Anyone have any ideas what I can do to correct this? I'm going thru iTunes withdrawal, and porn hardly seems the same without sound...

I have found that upon ocassion you need to use your CD that came with your motherboard to install audio.

Run it and it sould ID your audio device. Go to the manufactures site and get the drivers. BTW did you try to froce the install of the audio device by choosing let me select the new hardware?

I'm looking at the created profile, but for the life of me can't see the audio device info. Any thoughts as to where it would be listed?

Haven't done the select new yet, but will if this fails.

Fuckety fuck, I have better things I could be doing on a Sunday... *sigh*

Thanks for this, btw. Been working on it since 9 am...

Try going to the motherboard manufacturer's website. Usually the appropriate link is labeled either "Support" or "Downloads". Download the audio codec and install. You can also type the brand name and model number of your motherboard (as stated in the Belac profile) into Google to search for drivers. I experienced a similar difficulty after a reformat with an old Abit motherboard.

Here
And if your motherboard is an Asus... you are fucked!

Had a problem myself with audio and needed a new driver... the Asus tech support site and personnel are an absolute disaster... and I am being generous.

It takes forever to get an answer by phone... in fact I am still waiting for an answer from their techie to whom I spoke last Wednesday after trying for more than one day... and he promised to get right back to me!!!

In frustration, I tried their e-mail support... try answering their questionnaire if you are not a techie!

And when I finally got support by e-mail (from China!)and was given the URL for the downlaod, it was 10.5mb... which is fine, except that the download speed was about 900 BYTES per second... and I kept on getting timed out GRRRRR!

Finally, by figuring out what their off hours ere the download increased to -- are you ready? -- 2.4kb... so it only took more than 1.5 hours.. so what is the point of having cable with download capacity of 3.0mb?

So, good luck...

My gosh - this reminds me of how I am currently still having the same exact problem with my wireless PCI card - after re-formatting and re-installing windows - cleaning out all the spyware and virus off my computer's slate clean - and starting fresh - the wireless PCI card wasn't functioning properly anymore - as if it wasn't working at all - no longer picking up a signal from the router - to recieve the internet from it - as if the router was no longer there and no longer sending out a signal - which it was - some of the tech support people over the phone said - it might be the new windows I installed - that's to blame - and to install the service pack that improves the wireless internet serviceability of windows XP - but when i tried to install windows XP service pack - after downloading it - it was too big to install - it just crashes every time i try to install it ....

now i just threw the towel - and am gonna have the computer shop have a look at it - and at a bliink of an eye - i'm gonna just tell them to remove the wireless PCI card - cause wireless internet is just too unstable - and just replace it with a brand new network PCI card - and have data cable running two floors down to the router -

it ruined two weeks and a heck of a few months longer - trying to get a tech support guy over the phone to figure out what could possibly be wrong with it - and then realizing that I need to bring it to the shop - and realizing that I'm better off just replacing the wireless PCI card with a network PCI card and just abandon all hope of getting the wireless PCI card to work and pick up an internet signal again.

and all because i re-formatted and re-installed windows - I had no internet for many many months - fucking computers - and to think I'm going to school for this shit soon...

This might be a stupid question and you might have heard it a thousand times. But did the wireless card come with a software disk??

you might want to try:

http://www.driverguidetoolkit.com/

DriverGuide Toolkit identifies and lists drivers installed on your computer and, when connected to the Internet, allows you to search DriverGuide.com (and other sources) for driver updates and manufacturer sites. In addition, it allows you to backup your currently installed drivers for safe keeping. Backing up your Windows driver files means that they will be available to you the next time you need to reinstall the driver or the whole operating system. DriverGuide Toolkit places the driver files in one organized location of your choosing.

DriverGuide Toolkit is especially helpful in situations where you have a computer in your possession and the internal hardware is unknown. DriverGuide Toolkit can identify the hardware on the system and the associated drivers, back them up to a specified location, and find the latest driver updates for them. DriverGude Toolkit is even network compatible - you can just as easily connect to a remote computer on your network, backup drivers, and find updates!
