Hi, computer gurus. Quite often when I click on a link, the following error Explorer message appears. "This program has performed an illegal operation & will be shut down. If the problem persists, please contact the program vendor". Mainly this happens when I click on a TRZ link. If I enter the URL in the address window, usually the problem doen't show up. Any ideas? Reply in PLAIN English please, my computer skills are somewhat limited, I'm a "point & click" guy. Thanks.

Just to help us (or at least me) out a bit....

What operating system are you using? (Windows 95, 98, ME or XP Home or Pro)
What version of Internet Explorer are you using? (If you don't know, click on Help > About Internet Explorer)

At the range!!!
He's running windows 98 most likely. It's hard to answer that in plan english. When you click on the link Internet explorer is making a memory request from a block of memory that is already in use by another program, hence illegal.

(1) Remove some items from the start-up tray
(2) Buy more memory.
(3) Install win xp

Number one is a quick fix, number 2 isn't really worth it, number 3 is the best idea providing you system meets the requirements.

It's been awhile since I used win98, but here is how you remove the start-up items"

- click "start"
- "accessories"
- "system tools"
- "system information"
- "system configuration utility"
- "start-up"

Then uncheck the programs that are loading when you boot-up, then restart.

If you are not sure what something is leave it alone. But for starters you don't need to have ms office, logitec mouse controls, ati display settings, peer to peer stuff, in there. Or any program for that matter. I was once corrected, so I won't forget to mention leave any wireless Internet or pda stuff in there if you have any.

Good luck hope this helps.

Cutterbuck, go to the Windows update site and make sure you have the latest updates. That should solve your problem.

I used to have all sorts of problems when I had Windows 98. I eventually junked my hard-drive and reinstalled Windows 98 only to have all of the problems back within 2 months. I now have Windows XP and (knock wood) no problems.
