i might be going to new york city in late august to visit family the last time i went. i carried my cell phone which is on telus pay as you go service. it does not work. what should i do to make it work in New York?

Get an unlocked GSM phone. Buy a sim card in the US. That way you have a local # and don't pay roaming. Also buy a long distance card for talking to home.
When you get to New york go to RadioShack and pick up one of these phones

I would suggest buying a cheap unlocked phone from Tiger Direct or Pacific Mall, and when you're down in the states drop by a T-Mobile booth, and pick a T-Mobile Sim Card Activation Kit. Around 10 bucks at a booth, and then put the sim card in your phone and buy local prepaid minutes. Telus is not on GSM system and therefore sucks.

Good old unlocked GSM phone always works for me when I'm back in Miami or in Europe. All u have to do is get a new Sim card install, activate it and you're all set.
