With some of the comments in past threads, it's clear there are a number of misconceptions about the native community in Canada. Tonight one of the best shows on the air, the Doc Zone at 9:00 pm will begin a 4 part series on the same. For those who want to learn something watch it or set your PVR.

You might not believe what you hear or simply fall back on 'so what', but you'll get some ideas/points of views directly from the other side of the story with some meat on the bones and not just from 15 second sound bits and headlines.

I admire native culture and feel bad for what has been done to them, but as long as they continue to blame whitey and play the helpless victims of residential school abuse card, they will not progress. Walk proud and tall...move forward....take responsibilty for yourself.

Of course, it would help if Harper put some money into schools and recreation centres instead of prisons, but that is all Harper knows, unfortunately, and he won a majority.

The good news is they don't all blame all white guys. Many realize a lot of the problem is from inside their own circle, but there is much to be done on all fronts. You should see it when 600 chiefs get together and 'try' to iron things out.

An opportunity to excel and prosper and to give to their children a better future. Perhaps one last payment next year and then shut down that welfare system. Too many Reform rednecks in the Conservatives for that to happen. Much of those millions was spent on them, but not by them. White guys from Ottawa went to them and told them what Ottawa was going to spend the money on and still do. Much of what was done was crap, not designed to do what it was expected to do, or totally useless. I suggest you watch some of the series and maybe you'll learn something.

When the Irish came here they were shit on by the locals. The irish were happy when they Italians came here as the Irish weren't the bottom of the pile anymore. Now, I suspect the Portugese story isn't finished, but it not much different.

They didn't take that crap. It was thrust upon them, sometimes at the point of a gun.

Integration can be done in as few as two generations, but most natives who have made the transition from hunter gatherers to full fledged tax paying professionals in the modern community have taken maybe 4 generations, or never do; residential schools and relocation programs not withstanding. Some don't want to change and don't, but that doesn't automatically make them welfare bums.
