I made a will so that the people I care about wont be left to clear up the mess when I am gone.

I have a friend who is going through some issues.

Man married, divorced, etc. Has some older kids. Got into a new common law relationship with a young girl half his age. Girl made man put her name on deed to house and quite a few other things before he died. They knew he was ill. But never made a will. Now the guy is dead and GF has everything. The kids want special things like the some special signed nascar stuff and baseball stuff. Bought for the guy by his kids. The kids are well off so it is not the money. They bought these things for their dad and now the GF is not giving up a thing. She emailed the entire family 20 mins after the funreal forbidding any of them to come to the house or she would call the police. All sorts of stuff. They are fighting based on the fact that he was not of right mind when he signed this stuff over to the GF. But a proper will would have taken care of all that.

Oh they are but it is the hassle. What kid wants to go to court to get family heirlooms when they have just buried their dad. They have to be quick about it too. They had to get some injuction thing to stop her from selling anything until the courts have heard the case. It is crazy.

Here is another story of a young woman exploiting an old man. Old man's granddaughter convinced him to sign the deed to his house over to her. Once done she tried to sell the house and kick the old man to the curb. Another life lesson.

Rockslinger, please go find your own thread to put down young women. Not all women are like that and this is not what this thread is about either. I get you like to use people to post your views and opinions of negativity but I am not playing. I have seen men scam, steal, pressure, abuse, con woman all the time too. Stealing from people is non gender and non age based. I was speaking about something that just just happened last week to a friend of mine, but if you want me to post the countless stories I have of men stealing, abusing, cheating women. I can do that as well. I am sure you believe in fairness among the sexes so in the interest of fairness, let me know if you want those stories as well or can we just back to the topic of wills and their importance.

Now back this - OP, did you do POAs as well as they are just as important in my opinion.

If you have meaningful assets, also a good idea to visit a tax accountant. You might also wish to consider a "living will".

If one owns anything of value, one should have a will.

Powers of Attorney (POAs, 2 of them, one for health care and one for property) are also very important in case you are incapacitated and can't act in your own interest.

As indicated above, they aren't costly and will make things much easier on you. Just make sure your attorneys/executor know where to find them BEFORE they are needed.
