Jones sails a contrarian course
Conservative congressman scolds Bush, bucks GOP leaders

By VALERIE BAUERLEIN, Washington Correspondent

WASHINGTON -- The words "freedom fries" are still on the menu in the U.S. House cafeteria, and are likely to appear in the first line of Walter Jones' obituary, perhaps with their lesser-known cousin, freedom toast.

The words came to Jones, as so many things do, by a combination of God's hand and a constituent's request.

They made him famous, for a moment, after 10 years in the U.S. House. Jones led the fight to rename fries and toast at the Capitol in protest of the French leading opposition to the war in Iraq.

Ask him about it now, and he lays his cheek in his left hand, a habit he repeats dozens of times a day when lost in thought or sadness.

"I wish it had never happened," Jones said.

Like many things about Jones, freedom fries lend themselves to caricature. They are an emotional response to a complex problem, easily reduced to a ticker line on CNN.

But Jones now says we went to war "with no justification." He has challenged the Bush administration, quizzing Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and other presidential advisers in public hearings. He has lined the hallway outside his office with "the faces of the fallen."

Jones represents the state's most military congressional district, running from Camp Lejeune along the coast through Cherry Point, up to the Outer Banks.

"If we were given misinformation intentionally by people in this administration, to commit the authority to send boys, and in some instances girls, to go into Iraq, that is wrong," Jones said. "Congress must be told the truth."

Read the rest at the above link.

Many are called, few are chosen, I suppose. Not everyone can grasp the intricacies of the Administration's admittedly difficult and counter-intuitive, but invincible, thought- least of all that rustic embarassment of backwoods conservatism that Jones seems to represent. I guess the whole "freedom fries" things really was just an expression of narrow-minded, provincial bigotry (hey, when the Left is right, it's right)- for if it were more than that he'd know that one of the most important justifications for the war lay in exactly the situation that led him to coin the term. Just another cranky paleoconservative who can't get with the programme...

Are they all paleoconservatives who dont get it?

From Jonah Goldberg at National Review Online:

http://www.nationalreview.com/thecorner/05_05_15_corner-archive.asp#063618

Let's stir the pot nice and early. I'm not sure I understand NR's reversal on filibusters. In a December editorial -- titled "Let them Filibuster" -- the magazine said:

So we sympathize with those Republicans who have been proposing to change the Senate rules to make it easier to confirm nominees who have majority support. Nevertheless, we think the idea is a mistake.

And yesterday we said:

For Republicans to leave the filibusters in place now after months of demanding a change would be ignominious. The same pundits who are saying that the majority party should not insist on its prerogatives would turn around and say that the majority party is responsible and should be held accountable for everything the government does. More important, a surrender would tell everyone -- conservative voters, Democratic senators and interest groups, and the White House -- that Republican senators were irresolute in their support for judicial conservatism. It would thus set back the urgent cause of a reformation of the federal judiciary.

Back to Jonah: Here's what I don't get: Is NR's argument that ending the filibuster would be bad but now that GOP prestige is on the line it's necessary?

Yes, Jonah. When it's time to do the bidding of the Christfascists, you MUST fall in line and leave your brain at the door.

Ladies and gentlemen, when the Kool-Aid begins to wear off, it wears off in so many places. Sigh.

Only a fool never changes his mind, well that explains it for you.

Originally I thought getting away with the filibuster was a good thing, because everybody should have a chance to be voted on.

Now I think we should keep it. It is good to have checks and balances. It keeps the weirdos on both sides in check.

If it comes to vote I think the filibuster is going to survive.

Again with the Christofascists.

*all together now*

There is no such thing as a "Christofascist". The idea doesn't even make sense.

People can say what they want about the "paranoid style in American politics" as manifested on the Right, but at least the bogeymen that paranoid Right-wingers check under their beds for at night- Communists, terrorists, drug addicts, the BATF, whatever- all actually exist or at least used to. Paranoiacs of the Left these days just hallucinate imaginary enemies as often as not.

Consider the source. Your problem is, that you are trying to make sense out of guy, that makes no sense.
He is a professional agitator. Most likely uses a second handle and just tries to stir up shit.
Trunc....just have some fun with him..he'll go away. He is not the first or the last on here.
Cheers

Maybe, in your estimation, Jones should get it on with a goat, a box turtlle, or maybe even some falaffel.

Who, exactly, of all these jokers do you admire?

Jonah is a fat, pudgy, chickenhawk.

Jones is a "rustic embarrassment."

Joe Scarborough has zero IQ.

Rush is a pill-popping hypocrite.

Shrub lied.

Who, besides yourself, do you sit up at night, jacking yourself off about?

You are pretty quick in categorizing people. Well let's assume for a moment you are right. Tell us a little about your politics??
All you have done is acting like a woman on PMS. Give us your view of things, give us something to discuss, something of substance.
It is too easy to sit back and whine about what is wrong with the world. Now that you have your bitching out of your system let's start by listening to your solutions.

But please don't start with Iraq, this issue has been discussed here ad nauseum.

fas·cism n.

1. often Fascism
1. A system of government marked by centralization of authority under a dictator, stringent socioeconomic controls, suppression of the opposition through terror and censorship, and typically a policy of belligerent nationalism and racism.
2. A political philosophy or movement based on or advocating such a system of government.
2. Oppressive, dictatorial control.

OK. That's the definition of fascism.

Now watch Dr Dobson go to town:

http://movies.crooksandliars.com/dobson1.mov

... and watch especially when he talks about those "five black-robed judges" who can tell us all what to do. Those "black robed judges" are members of the US Supreme Court. Seems like he got his "black robes" and his "white robes" of the KKK mixed up.

Dr Dobson is a fascist -- he insists that no less than 100% of Bush's judge appointees be confirmed (among other things). Dr Dobson is Christian.

Hence, Christofascist. Lesson over. Were you paying attention? There may be a test later.

Well, at least now we know where you get this stuff from.
So? I don't hide it.

You have a problem with SEEING and HEARING the right-wingers bloviate and lie outright?

You remind me of the old question, "Now who are you going to believe? Me or your lying eyes."

Crooks and Liars is what the Rethugs are. A fine site and worth linking to. Often.

OK smart guy. Ya got me. [Whatever!]

But let me clue you in on something. The chances that you have found me out as someone who posts under another handle is absolutely infintesimal.

See, genius, I don't post under another handle. (Used to, but that was a LONG time ago).
