The Sopranos' Fourth Season
Well, it's officially be done in the U.S. and now Canada. I watched the first episode and, in fact, taped it, too. I plan to rewatch it because I missed some dialogue arguing with my boyfriend to bring me tea that tasted like more than flavoured water! Here are my observations, as a consumer, avid Sopranos fan and a trained writer for television:
a. Lots of forshadowing that's pretty predictable - ie. Carmela "all things come to an end Tony", Tony to Dr. Melfi "there are only two ways out of this kind of thing for high profile guys like me - dead or the can". Lots of lead-ins to future possibilities.
b. In a way, the tone seemed a little flat but that may be reflective of the general mood of the plots (ie. times are tougher, leaner, people have to be more careful with income, etc.).
c. Tony's extra-curricular philandering (ie thinking with the little head instead of the big head) may lead him to a jail cell at the same time as Uncle Junior. While there is purportedly a law enforcement witness in his doctor's office (presumably the nurse he was flirting with), Tony was visibly attracted to the undercover F.B.I. Agent who has befriended Adrianna. Wouldn't that be a plot twister - Tony fools around with her, thereby compromising not only his crime family but his family family and at the same time the married, mother of a baby F.B.I. agent has to decide just how far she is prepared to go to snare Tony Soprano. Does sleeping with the suspect come with the badge? And how does her spouse, who is also a cop, react to this?
d. The Christopher heroin storyline and the killing of the cop who was the purported killer of his father has me a little baffled. Did Tony set him up and if so why? He alluded to the fact that it may not be true by telling the cop, even if you aren't or weren't you're still dead and yet at the same time he seems to truly believe he was guilty. The other thing that perplexes me is how could someone as sharp as Tony not realize Christopher is out of it particularly if he's grooming him to be his next-in-line? And on a much less significant note, why the hell is an earner like Christopher letting his mother live in a dump like that?
e. Janice and Ralphie (I predict) will have an affair that Rosalie finds out about and then commits suicide. What's with the retarded bangs Ralphie?
All in all, it was an okay season's opener although not quite as exciting as I'd hoped. The mentions of September 11 seemed a little forced, too.
C'est toute. Bada bing bada boom.
