Man, this thing is a doozy.I'm using Windows Vista Basic and got it sometime last week.It basically stopped me from connecting to the internet and i was met by a fake splash screen when I tryed to boot up.after 3 hours of fiddling with it I was able to do a system restore by opening Wndows defender and going back 3 weeks.....problem solved right?...No.

I switched providers 2 days ago and when I went to start my system up it would let me connect to the net.The technician asked me if I had any viruses recently and I explained the Thinkpoint issue. He stated the virus is basically in the Modem(Which makes no sense since the modem was changed out) and that I would have to be a system wipe to get rid of it.

i did some more research and found out that Windows Vista Basic does not have a complete restore option.Any good suggestions to solve this problem.can I purchase a wipe disk.I can access my system. Is there an option on the hardrive to do wipe it?

Any information is appreciated.

so let me guess...you've never made a backup using ghost or acronis? too late now. if you don't even have a restore partition, well, go buy your own copy of windows. a quick search suggests this might work:

you have a lot of work ahead. once you get your system clean again, i'd suggest you get crackin' and keep your own backups.

Here's where Linux rides in to save the day. The way to remove viruses from netbooks is to load a Linux Live Install Disk into your CD/DVD burner. Copy all files to an external hard drive (I have used Linux Mint for this). Now you at least have your files saved.
If you now boot up and install Kaspersky from a CD, you should be able to clean the drive.
If not you can reload Windows, install Kaspersky, then copy your stuff back from the external hard drive Kaspersky will clena the viruses.
Any computer servicing place worth it's salt can do this for you for a price. $80 or so. They can retrieve your COA from your harddrive and thereby re-install windows.
Tell them exactly what you want! And yes, ask them to make you a restore disk (or do it yourself)

I've saved a couple friends files the same way using Ubuntu. It was easy to do. All their stuff was recovered.
