There is more money being spent on breast implants and Viagra today than on Alzheimer's research.

This means that by 2020, there should be a large elderly population with perky boobs and huge erections and absolutely no recollection of what to do with them.

Breast implants look horrible 10+ years in. Why do you think they need to keep changing them out for bigger ones?

how about this thought for the day: there are billions of dollars pumped into building luxo-cottages in the Muskoka's and the Kawarthas, which then sit empty for 10 months of the year, and if the owners happen to be European, these homes sit vacant for years on end. If you filled everyone one of these places with a needy family you could probably house every homeless person in Canada and Haiti.

Building those cottages costs $
They're paid for with $ by people who EARNED IT
That $ goes to builders & building supply companies who WORK FOR IT.

Handouts dont do any good even for decent Canadian Poor..... Let alone Hatian TRASH that would turn the places into shitholes..... because if they Knew better their whole own COUNTRY would be liveable.

If I earn $ I should be able to do whatever the fuck I want with it. ALL OF IT. & I can guarantee that at least speaking for myself a really fair portion would go to public works & local families in need.

If you want to blame someone for the economic times we live in blame the banks for their intrest, fractional reserves & predatory lending..... the government for policies that make employing people here a mssive chore & NOT teaching people basic economics in their mandatory schools & finally... the PEOPLE who gt into debt & spend beyond their means & who think theyre owed something because someone else has it...

& Oh yes... Fuck Haiti in it's backward AIDS infected ass.

Are they not the ones that own the cottages ?

Distributing social goods equitably is not giving goods away to those who have not earned it

wow, so much anger...but I digress...

The problem, IMO, is that some preach the "sweat of my brow" philosophy and fail to extrapolate beyond the tip of their nose. You want the freedom to earn a buck and spend it the way you want? ALL of it? Why pay taxes? Why build infrastructure? Why have police? Why have a national health care system? You want to be a true capitalist? Here's the formula...disenfranchise yourself from the societal MANDATED parasites who steal a portion of your hard earned dollar and live on the sweat of your brow. Use your dollar to run water to your taps, pump shit from your toilet, and ship those really cool electronic components from China that go into your DVR. Oh, and protect your land from squatters, and your possessions from thieves.

I earned my dollar...I want to spend it freely, but please make me a member of a society (i.e. social community) that accepts and protects me.

Here's your cake sir, care to eat it now or later?

BTW Simon, thanks for the nightmares.

"distributing social goods equitably" means the authorities take the social goods from someone who's acquired them (honestly or dishonestly does not matter - just possession), and transferring ownership to someone who cannot or does not pay.

"From each according to his abilities; to each according to his needs" -- the most inhumanly brutal doctrine ever put into words.

Communism

I'm pretty sure that this little social experiment has been proven to be a failure time and again.

Math not your best subject?

Perhaps that is why your ideas on society are impossible.

There are nine million people in Haiti. How many are homeless?

You think there are a million cottages in Muskoka that could house say six each?

There are two million people living in houses in TORONTO.

So say you want to give 2 million homeless Haitian people homes in Toronto. Where you going to put them?

Get the picture?

I'm ALL for looking after people who try but can't look after themselves, within my limits.

But here is the problem with human nature that screwed communism. Without the incentive to work to get ahead, people won't bother to try to get ahead. Why go work your ass off if the guy who doesn't, gets almost the same?

If you are saying that the government should simply do a one time stripping of the assets, homes, bank accounts of "rich" people and then give it all to the poor people, then the money would be gone pretty quickly.

Then what?

Thank about it for a little while.
i'm not suggesting re-locating anyone to/nor from anywhere. My thought for the day was a visual representation/ reflection on the gross inequities between the haves and the have nots. Some readers got it, you obviously did not. I have toured visitors from both Europe as well as rather wealthy South Americans, through cottage country from time to time. They are typyically flabbergasted by the immensity of the conspicuous consumption. To them it seems to represent wastefullness of land and resources. The South Americans particularly commented that if they had second homes at some distance in their countries, and these places weren't fenced nor guarded, after one week away from the place, the doors/windows, furnishings and interiors would be ripped out and carted off.

As the middle class continues to erode, and middle class auto-workers find themselves working in Walmarts, fast food joints and call centres, the increasing number of have nots in canada are some day going to wake up rather hungry and upset with their lifestyle inequities, at which time the "Muskokans" will be facing the same dilemmas their wealthy counterparts are dealing with in third world countries. It's only a matter of time before the pool boys will need to have that German shephard on a leash as they patrol your barbed wire walls. Some "cottagers" are already routinely detecting squatters having wintered or summered in their abodes in the Bancroft area. i really have no solutions, it's simply an observation...and who is to say we will stand immune from anarchy, rebellion and riots when the working stiffs have finally had enough. As soon as they run out of cash for their sedatives, (booze, drugs, video games and big screen tv's), they'll be after yours. things are already heading that way quickly in the States..angry people, Tea Parties, red necks, guns, militias, survivalists, home foreclosures..and it goes on and on and on

Not really. A vast majority of the people that own these beautiful cottages have inherited them and/or cash to buy and maintain them. Most rich people never earned anywhere close to 100% of their wealth, myself included.
